When is the Mr Olympia 2022 bodybuilding competition?

THE Mr Olympia 2022 convention wrapped up Sunday after Hadi Choopan was announced as the new champion, snagging the title from reigning winner Mamdouh "Big Ramy" Elssibay.

Mr Olympia is the Super Bowl for bodybuilders, convening annually for the best athletes to show off their physiques.

There were twelve events this year held at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino on the Las Vegas strip.

The main event, Mr Olympia was announced Saturday night and Hadi Choopan surprised audiences by taking the title, Sporting News reports.

Mr Olympia began in 1965, and since its inception only 16 bodybuilders have held the title, proving how difficult it is to unseat a reigning champ.

Other winners of the event include Andrea Shaw, who defended her title as Ms Olympia, and Chris Bumstead, who placed first in the Classic Physique Olympia.

  • Who is Ms Olympia?

    Andrea Shaw has officially defended her title as Ms Olympia.

    The three-time champion admitted in an interview with Muscle and Fitness that she didn't always want to be a bodybuilder.

    Shaw explained she didn't want to lose her femininity, but naturally carried a lot of muscle, leading her to the sport.

    She added her purpose as Ms Olympia is, "not to be as jacked as possible, but rather to be a beacon for women to get interested in their health and their bodies.

    I realize I’m at a very high level, but that’s not what I expect from any of my sisters."

  • Mr Olympia alums – Lee Haney

    Lee Haney holds one of the highest wins for Mr Olympia alums holding eight consecutive titles.

    Haney won every competition from 1984-1991 and now works as a personal trainer, according to Men’s Health.

  • Mr Olympia alums – Ronnie Coleman

    Ronnie Coleman won eight Mr Olympia contests from 1998-2005, according to Men’s Health.

    Coleman was a former college football player before entering the world of bodybuilding.

  • Mr Olympia alums – Larry Scott

    Larry Scott was the first Mr Olympia in 1965 and earned the title of Golden Boy among bodybuilders, according to Men’s Health.

    Scott popularized the “preacher curl” which is now sometimes referred to as the “Scott Curl.”

    Scott was only 5’7 and 200 lbs.

    Perhaps the most famous Mr Olympia winner is none other than Arnold Schwarzenegger.

    Schwarzenegger won the Mr Olympia title six years in a row during the early 70s and then again in 1980 in a comeback year, according to Britannica.

    Schwarzenegger began his diverse career as a bodybuilder and was a part of the Golden Era of the sport.

    A fan of both Mr Olympia and The World Cup took to Twitter to share their thoughts on both events coinciding on the same day.

    He wrote, "Gonna have to mark this day as one of the best days in history. #Mrolympia in the morning and #WorldCupFinal in the night. . . GG"

  • History of Ms Olympia

    Ms Olympia debuted in 1980, 15 years after the start of Mr Olympia.

    Rachel McLish won the first competition in 1980 and then again 1982.

    Iris Kyle holds the record for most wins, earning the title 10 times, according to Fitness Volt.

    Andrea Shaw won in 2020 and 2021, she will be defending her title at this year’s competition.

    Ms Olympia had a rocky start, debuting 15 years after the men.

    The competition was also discontinued for a period of time in 2014, due to low ticket sales.

  • Winners are hard to unseat

    Even though Mr Olympia has run since 1965, there have only been 16 bodybuilders to hold the title.

    It is incredibly difficult to unseat a champion, which has resulted in many bodybuilders with consecutive wins.

    Mamdouh Elssbiay lost his title this year, he had hopes of adding a third win to his roster.

  • Arnold Schwarzenegger has won Mr Olympia 7 times

    The most well-known and one of the most successful bodybuilders in Mr Olympia history is Arnold Schwarzenegger.

    Seven Mr Olympia contests were won by Schwarzenegger, including six straight championships from 1970 to 1975. In 1980, he would add a seventh Mr Olympia victory to his resume.

    Lee Haney tied Schwarzenegger’s record in 1990, then the following year, he broke it.

    Later, Ronnie Coleman would exceed Schwarzenegger’s record and tie Haney, and in 2017, Phil Heath would tie Schwarzenegger with his seventh championship.

    As the sponsor and namesake of the annual Arnold Sports Festival, Schwarzenegger continues to be interested in bodybuilding despite his fame as an actor who later transitioned into politics as the governor of California.

  • What the winner of Mr Olympia makes

    The overall prize money for the 11 Mr Olympia events this year will be an astounding $1.6million.

    The convention’s overall budget has increased to its greatest level ever, surpassing the previous sum of $1.4million.

    All of the event winners share in the prize money, with Mr Olympia being the only first-place winner to take home six figures, according to Sporting News.

    According to reports, the top reward in 2022 will be a tidy $750,000, thus winning will boost both your financial situation and reputation.

    If the payout from the previous year is any indication, Mr. Olympia 2022 will be walking away with a staggering amount of cash.

    In 2021, winner Elssbiay took home $400,000.

  • Fan pays respect to former winner

    User @MoSarwat took to Twitter to honor 2021 Mr Olympia winner Mamdouh “Big Ramy Elssbiay.”

    He wrote: “Coming from Egyptian descent, I am so proud of Big Ramy (the world renowned Egyptian bodybuilder) despite his loss in Mr. Olympia this year. His work ethic, dedication, and perseverance are teachable. You gotta respect the journey and not only the end result!”

    Elssbiay was the favorite this year, hoping to become the eighth person ever with three wins in a row, according to Bleacher Report.

  • More on Hadi Choopan

    Hadi Choopan was born in 1987 and is an Iranian professional bodybuilder.

    He was on the Iranian National Bodybuilding Team from 2011 to 2016 before going on to compete in Mr Olympia.

    Choopan has also competed in multiple contests with the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB), achieving several titles.

    Choopan, nicknamed “The Persian Wolf” can now add Mr Olympia to his 105 provincial gold medals, and 33 national medals.

    Hadi Choopan is the new Mr Olympia. He was crowned the tital at Saturday’s finals and the news was released Sunday morning.

    Choopan defeated the two-time champion, Mamdouh “Big Ramy” Elssbiay who finished in fifth place.

    This year at Mr Olympia, fans had the opportunity to vote for their champion.

    Those in attendance at the event were given a scorecard and a code to cast their votes, according to Muscle and Fitness.

    Nick Walker was announced as this year’s and the first ever Peoples’ Champ, BarBend reports.

    The Wheelchair Olympia is a new addition to bodybuilding and showcases the physiques of those who use wheelchairs.

    Harold Kelly defended his title, taking first place for the fifth year in a row.

    Erin Banks, who was 12th one year ago, completed the upset against defending champ and three-time winner Brandon Hendrickson.

    It came down to the finals, where individual posing routines were performed before a winner was crowned.

    Ultimately, Mattos took home her second win in the Wellness division.

    Andrea Shaw is an American professional bodybuilding champion and physique and figure competitor.

    She holds three Ms. Olympia title wins and three Ms Rising Phoenix title wins.

    Shaw retained her title, winning her third consecutive Ms. Olympia, meanwhile Angela Yeo scored a runner-up finish in her Olympia debut.

    Missy Truscott made her presence known by performing her routine in a shark costume, which was met with loud cheers from the crowd, according to Barbend.

    212 Olympia winner- Shaun Clarida

    Clarida was the first champion crowned at the 2022 Olympia.

    He dedicated the win to his expectant wife and their soon-to-be-born child, according to Barbend. Clarida last won the 212 Olympia in 2020
