PITONS, Saint Lucia: Less than 1 million years ago, a series of volcanoes become active around Soufriere Bay in Saint Lucia, forming the Pitons mountains. The Gros Piton (Large Peak) is home to 27 bird species (5 of them endemic), 3 indigenous rodents, 1 opossum, 3 bats, 8 reptiles & 3 amphibians. The volcanic complex includes a geothermal field with sulphurous fumeroles & hot springs.
