13 years ago, Hugh Laurie made the leap from posh British funnyman to smouldering American TV hero in ABC's new medical drama House.

The show was a rare ratings winner and critical hit, and it lasted for eight seasons until its conclusion five years ago. For a time there it was the world's most-watched show.

But how has the ensemble cast fared since the show began? We've ranked all the main cast to see who's profited the most from starring in it.

13. Charlyne Yi (Dr Chi Park)

Comedian and musician Charlyne joined the cast of House for its final season as one of House's quirky new team members. Like her co-star Odette Annable, who joined at the same time, she didn't have much time to cement herself as one of the more memorable characters.

Since then, she has mainly concentrated on her writing and comedy work, but in terms of acting roles she featured in episodes of Looking, Jane the Virgin and the new Twin Peaks. She also voices Ruby in Steven Universe.

12. Robert Sean Leonard (Dr James Wilson)

Robert was already a well known face thanks to roles in movies like Dead Poets Society and Much Ado About Nothing by the time he landed the role as House's long-suffering best mate.

At first, Laurie figured that Wilson was actually the main character, as he thought no-one would want to watch a show where the main character was a git. The series ended with Wilson sadly dying of cancer, before he and his old pal literally rode off into the sunset together.

Since the show ended, he's had a few TV roles, including a recurring part in Law & Order: SVU, but he has mostly focused on theatre work, including a run in the US and UK of To Kill a Mockingbird.

11. Lisa Edelstein (Dr Lisa Cuddy)

Sadly, Lisa decided not to return to House for its final season, or even its finale, which always left a bad taste for all House fans.

She has continued to appear in a range of TV shows since then, including a three-episode arc in The Good Wife and three episodes of Castle. She regularly voices a character in The Legend of Korra, and currently appears in Bravo series Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce.

10. Amber Tamblyn (Dr Martha Masters)

Amber was briefly a main cast member in season 7, and returned for a stint in the final season, having already made a name for herself in the likes of Joan of Arcadia, General Hospital and others.

In 2013, she joined the cast of Two and a Half Men as Jenny, Charlie Sheen's long lost daughter. She also got her own Lip Sync Battle episode against Ugly Betty's America Ferrera in 2016. In 2015, she also starred opposite Bob Odenkirk in Netflix's movie Girlfriend's Day.

9. Omar Epps (Dr Eric Foreman)

Omar starred in all eight seasons as the constantly annoyed and fed up Foreman, having previously featured in ER and various movies in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Since House, he led the cast of ABC's fantasy drama Resurrection, and he currently stars in the USA Network series Shooter opposite Ryan Phillippe.

8. Peter Jacobson (Dr Chris Taub)

Taub was one of those characters who you thought would only be in a couple of episodes, but somehow managed to hang on until the bitter end. We're guessing it's because everyone loved Peter on the set.

In 2011, Peter had a voice role in Pixar's Cars 2, and also featured in the action romp White House Down in 2013. He has since appeared in a host of TV shows in recent years, including The Americans, Ray Donovan and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Currently, Peter stars in a main role in the USA Network's sci-fi drama Colony alongside Josh Holloway and Sarah Wayne Callies.

7. Odette Annable (Dr Jessica Adams)

Odette joined the cast in the final season, and if you weren't paying attention you probably just assumed she was Olivia Wilde.

In 2013, she recurred in the action series Banshee, and also appeared in Two and a Half Men, The Astronaut Wives Club and The Grinder.

She was recently cast as the next big villain Reign in Supergirl's upcoming third season.

6. Anne Dudek (Dr Amber Volakis)

AKA 'Cutthroat Bitch', Amber appeared in season 4 and 5, and was Wilson's girlfriend for a while until she was killed off in a car crash brought on by accidental poisoning.

Anne had already found fame in the UK at least after leading the cult Channel 4 comedy The Book Group. Since leaving House, she has popped up in episodes of How I Met Your Mother, Grey's Anatomy and The Mindy Project among others, and had recurring roles in Mad Men, Covert Affairs and Big Love. She currently stars as Tracy Brand in The Flash.

5. Jesse Spencer (Dr Robert Chase)

British and Australian viewers already knew and loved Jesse for his days as Billy Kennedy in Neighbours, but he had an even bigger role as the grouchy Aussie Dr Chase.

During the show, he was engaged to co-star Jennifer Morrison, but they called off the wedding in 2007. Awkwardly, their characters did get married later on.

The year that House ended, Jesse joined the cast of popular drama Chicago Fire, and continues to be one of its leads five years later as Matthew Casey. He has also appeared in its spinoffs Chicago PD and Chicago Med.

4. Olivia Wilde (Dr Remy 'Thirteen' Hadley)

If we had done this list a couple of years ago, Olivia probably would have been number one, but she has been rather quiet of late, raising a family.

After playing Thirteen for five seasons in House, Olivia had already become one of the next female movie leads, appearing in the likes of Tron: Legacy, Cowboys and Aliens, In Time, Rush and Her. She also appeared in episodes of BoJack Horseman and featured in HBO's ill-fated Vinyl. Earlier this year, she made her Broadway debut in a new production of 1984.

She and husband Jason Sudeikis have had two children since the show ended: son Otis Alexander in April 2014 and daughter Daisy Josephine in October 2016.

3. Kal Penn (Dr Lawrence Kutner)

Harold and Kumar star Kal suddenly quit the show in season 5 – his character took his own life in a shock twist – after he amazingly took on a new role in Barack Obama's White House. He was the Associate Director in the White House Office of Public Engagement from April 2009 to July 2011. Pretty neat, huh?

In February 2012, Penn acted as a co-chair for the re-election campaign of Obama. Later that year, Penn hosted coverage of the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. His speech encouraged young people to register to vote and defended Obama's record.

In November 2013, President Obama appointed Penn to serve on the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities. The following year, he served as the Master of Ceremonies for the White House Student Film Festival.

He still acts, too. He played Robin's boyfriend Kevin in How I Met Your Mother, and currently stars in Kiefer Sutherland's White House drama Designated Survivor.

2. Jennifer Morrison (Dr Allison Cameron)

Jennifer left the series after six years, but at least returned for the final season briefly. She's perhaps now best known for playing Snow White's daughter Emma Swan in Once Upon a Time for six seasons.

She also had a recurring role as Ted's potential wife Zoey in How I Met Your Mother, and had roles in the movies Warrior, Star Trek and Amityville: The Awakening.

1. Hugh Laurie (House)

There can only be one winner, really. He was already a household name in the UK as a comedy legend and his partnership with Stephen Fry, but House also made him a well-known face in the States, even if they didn't realise he was British for years.

He has kept busy since House ended, most notably featuring as baddie Richard Roper in The Night Manager, winning a Golden Globe for the role.

He also features in Veep as Senator Tom James, and currently stars as a different doctor in Chance on Hulu. Hugh also had a leading role in the Disney movie Tomorrowland.

Hugh has also found the time to release two critically-acclaimed blues albums, reaching number two with Let Them Talk and number three with Didn't It Rain.
