GEORGE GROSZ
Gott mit Uns.

Portfolio with text and 6 (of 9) lithographs, 1920. 653x480 mm; 25 1/2x 18 3/4 inches (sheets), full margins, loose as issued. Edition of 125. Numbered "67" and identified as Edition C in ink, on the justification page. Published by Malik-Verlag, Berlin. Original paste board slip case.

The motto "Gott mit uns" (God is with us) appeared on the belt buckles of Geman Reichwehr soldiers in the early 1920's. The invocation was quickly adopted by German nationalists and became a fanatical maxim.

Grosz's decision to borrow the battle cry for the title of his portfolio detailing the perversions of militarism resulted in an official prosecution. The hearing resulted in significant fines for Grosz and his publisher. In addition, the plates and molds used to create the set were confiscated and destroyed and the copyright was transferred to the German National Defense. Dückers MIII.
