Referring now to Fig. 2, it will'be seen that- I employ an additional winding 23 on-the exciting-coil and provide n this winding a circuit-controller 60, here shown as being in the form ofa switch which is movable into and out of engagement with ,a contactfil. This circuit controller is adapted to open and close the circuit for the winding 23. If desired,
this circuit-controller may be omitted entirely and the circuit always be a closed one. In this figure the controller in the circuit of the exciting-coil is I designated 7 0, and, as shown, is in the form of a switch movable into and out of engagement with a contact 71. In this forinwhen the brake is to be withdrawn 'from the part 10 the circuit-controller 70 is first operated to close the circuit of the exciting-coil, and the circuit-controllerisleft in such position as to always keep this circuit closed so long as the brake is to be held out of engagement with the part 10. When the brake is to be applied,
the circuit-controller 60 is first operated to close the circuit for the coil 23 and the circuit-controller then operated to open the circuit of the exciting-coil; The opening of the circuit of the excitingcoil will cause a decrease in the magnetic flux, and this decrease I will induce a current in the coil 23, which tends to build up the decreasing magnetic flux' and to retard the movement of the part 21 out of the exciting-coil, thereby obtaining a slow and gradual application of the brake. In this form of the invention the circuit-controller 60 may be first operated to close the circuit of the coil 23 before the circuit-controller 70 is operated.'and then the brake will be withdrawn slowly, because of the choking effect of the coil 23. If it is desired to -be either interrupted or short-circ directions- It will be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise arrangement of circuits shown in Fig. 1 nor to the precise arrangement and form of the circuit-controllers, a all of the circuit-controllers may be comprised in a single device which may be so arranged that upon its operation the current will first be supplied to the exciting-coil .to withdraw the brake, and after the withdrawal of the brake the resistance will bebrought into the circuit, and finally when the applied the circuit, of the exciting-coil may the exciting-coil closed upon itself.
