-UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES S. BARNARD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES PRESTON AND ALEXANDER JONES, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
TOY BANK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,189, dated February 13, 1883.
Application filedJune 27,1882. (No model.)
To an whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES S. BARNARD, of the city, county, and State of New York, haveiiivented a new and Improved Toy Bank, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descri ption.
This invention consists in the hollow figur of an elephant provided with a slot in its forehead and with aswingingtriink, in the end of which the coin is to be placed, which trunk is connected with suitable devices for swinging it, whereby it a coin is placed in the end of the trunk and the trunk is swung upward by depressing a rod projecting from the back of the elephant or by raising the elephants tail this coin will be thrown from the slot in the elephants trunk through the slot in its forehead into the hollow ofthe elephants body.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a longitudinal elevation of my improved toy bank. Figflil is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same.
The hollow figure of an elephant, A, is provided in the forehead with a longitudinal slot, B, which is of sufficient size to admit a coin. The trunk C of theelepiiant is pivoted in the head by a piutle, u, in such a manner that this trunk can swing upward, as shown in Fig. 1 in dotted lines, this trunk being held curved upward. At its outer end this trunk C is provided with a vertical slot, d, into which the coin D, which is to be deposited in the bank, is placed. Beyond the pivota the trunk C is provided with an extension, C, which is connected by a pivoted coupling-rod, E, with an angle-lever, F, pivoted Within the elephant. A vertical rod, G. is attached to the pivot, uniting the end of the rod E and the arm of the angle-lever F, and projects upward through a slot, G, in the back ot'the elephant. A rod, H, connects the rear end of the angle-lever F with the upper end of the pivoted tail J of the elephant, as shown. The head of the elephant is provided with'a longitudinal slot, 12, through which the trunk C can swing upward. The representation of the blanket K on the back of the elephant is hinged and forms a door, through which the money can be removed. The coin D that is to be deposited in the bank is placed in the slot (1 at the outer end of the trunk C, and the trunk is then thrown upward by suddenly depressing the rod G or by raising the tail J of the elephant. By this sudden upward IDOVBIIIGUEOfIHt trunk the coin D will be thrown on a curved line through the slot B into the hollow of the elephants body, and the trunk C will drop back again, the rod G will be raised, and the tail J will drop. If desireththe trunk can be connected with mechanisms for operating it independently of the tail J; but it must always swing upward, as described, to throw thecoin 6 through the slot B into the body of the elephant.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The combination, with the hollow figure of an elephant provided with a slot in its forehead, ofa swinging trunk and devices forswinging this trunk, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the hollow figure 7 of an elephant provided with aslot in its forehead, of a pivoted trunk provided with a slot or groove in its outer end, and of devices for swinging this trunk, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the hollow elephant :A, provided with a slot, B, in its forehead, of the swinging trunk C, the rod E, the angle-lever F, and the vertical rod G-,snbstantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
4:. The combination, with the hollow elephant A, having a slot, B,'in its forehead, of the swinging trunk C, the rod E,the angle-le- 9o ver F, the rod G, the connecting-rod H, and the tail J, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination, with the hollow elephant A, provided with a slot, B, in its fore- 5 head, of the swinging trunk C, devices for swinging the trunk, and the hinged door K, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
