The Viennese music scene mourns the death of Erich Zawinul. The concert promoter, DJ and son of jazz legend Joe Zawinul succumbed to a COVID-19 infection in a Vienna hospital this week. As a concert promoter, Zawinul worked with international music greats such as Deep Purple, Zucchero and Rod Stewart. Zawinul also participated in the Life Ball for many years.

Lifeball’s organizer Gerry Keszler remembered his companion on behalf of the entire organization: “You, dear Erich Zawinul, we

re pure joie de vivre and cordiality. As a friend, as a long-time supporter of the Life Ball, without any self-interest, always dedicated to the cause,” he wrote on Facebook. “Through your involvement we were able to attract stars like Ricky Martin, Gregory Porter or Christina Perri for the ball, several times you hosted a floor in the City Hall and took care of the artists with full commitment.  International concert promoter Erich Zawinul has died in a Vienna hospital as a result of a COVID-19 infection.

The 54-year-old son of jazz legend Joe Zawinul promoted international stars, created full dance floors as a DJ, was co-organizer of the iconic Jazzquizz at the legendary Cafe Drechsler in Vienna and a great storyteller. The local scene has lost another original.

As reported by several media outlets on Saturday, Erich Zawinul succumbed to the effects of a COVID-19 infection at the age of 54. As an organizer and promoter, Zawinul worked with international greats such as Chick Corea, Rod Stewart and Deep Purple.
