Since the days of version 3.1, Microsoft Windows has been a widely used operating system for personal computers.

But, it was 20 years ago today that Windows 98 was made available to the public. Originally made under the code-name Project Memphis, Windows 98 built upon the previous success of windows 95.

Windows 98 allowed users new elements like thumbnails for pictures, the quick launch toolbar for easy access to programs, as well as improved networking capability.

With other versions of Windows since, Microsoft discontinued support for all editions of windows 98 in July of 2006. For a while, it was one of the more commonly used editions of Windows, Until XP, although there are a few out there that still use 98.
