The Obama administration has agreed to Gov. John Bel Edwards' request to waive work requirements for thousands of food stamp recipients who were threatened with the loss of benefits.The U.S. Department of Agriculture notified the Edwards administration Wednesday about the approval. Former Gov. Bobby Jindal allowed the waiver to expire last year.The work requirements were supposed to launch Jan. 1 for adults ages 18 to 49 without children. To receive food stamps through the Supplemental Nutrition and Assistance Program, or SNAP, those adults would have to work at least 20 hours per week or be enrolled in a federally approved job training program.Edwards sought a one-year extension of the waiver. The USDA granted it retroactively to Dec. 1.Louisiana had similar waivers for the last 19 years.
