Ride to the rescue of nation’s cyclists, Cameron is urged

David Cameron must take personal responsibility for the safety of cyclists and promote the measures needed to make Britain’s streets safer, he is told in a letter today from 40 cross-party MPs.

The Conservative, Liberal Democrat and Labour MPs are calling on Mr Cameron to use his speech at the Conservative Party conference, which begins in Birmingham on Sunday, to address the rising death toll of cyclists on Britain’s roads.

Mr Cameron, who was often pictured riding his bicycle while in Opposition, acknowledged the need for improved cycle safety in the House of Commons earlier this year, but the MPs are asking him to provide personal leadership in seeing that the necessary measures are implemented.

A cross-party inquiry into cycle safety starts this autumn, when
