You heard it here first: the devil wears llama. Although, technically, it’s alpaca and Dame Glenda Bailey is so far from the haughty froideur of the front-row stereotype that she had to learn to laugh more quietly when her office at US Harper’s Bazaar went open-plan.

“It was a big problem,” she hoots. “Everyone could hear me. But I do believe in having a jolly time.”

She shows me her alpaca hat from the collection she recently launched with the American brand Peruvian Connection, which is jolliness personified. In fashion editor black (of course) but cosy and with ear-flaps, it has a pompom mohawk along the top that she admits makes people smile.
