[SHOT 2018] Why Duracoat Remains a Top Contender in Firearm Finishes

One only needs to spend a minute or two at the Lauer Weaponry/DuraCoat booth to instantly recognize why the company is absolutely thriving.

A family-owned business with 14 employees, DuraCoat has been one of the leaders in firearms finishes for over 11 years.

But if some people had their way, the company’s growth would have stalled before it got started.

“People Will Do a Lot of Twisted Things to Make a Buck”

In 2006 DuraCoat’s paint was banned in New York by then-mayor Michael Bloomberg for the paints use to “make dangerous guns look like toys”. Bloomberg eventually went so far as to pass a law stating that if anyone buys or sells a gun coloring kit in the state of New York they’d face up to a year in jail or pay a $1,000 fine.

In return, Lauer created a kit comprised of 5 different colors – one named after each of the five burroughs and created a barrel stencil of Bloomberg’s face (Google the bobblehead they made. It is hilarious).

    More than meets the eye

DuraCoat isn’t just about changing the color of your gun.

    • DuraVelvet gives the feel of overmolded rubber to whatever its applied to.
    • DuraStain is great for refinishing wood stocks.
    • Lauer Weaponry also has its own line of suppressors and AR-15 rifles!

And, like any good serial entrepreneurs, you literally never know what they’ll come out with next.

DuraBlue mimics gun bluing without the upkeep and maintenance of hot bluing.

What’s New For DuraCoat in 2018?

Between their recent launch of Dura-dize (a series of gun coatings that mimic anodizing), plus the existing DuraChrome (a mirror-shine, chrome-like finish that even reflects like real chrome), and Dura Blue (a finish that truly mimics the luster and shine of traditional gun bluing without the upkeep), DuraCoat is never at a loss for new colors and techniques.

Lauer Weaponry, proving once again why they are a force to be reckoned with.
