Curved penis (Peyronie’s Disease)

Peyronie’s is the curvature of the penis during erection, pain and lumps felt during palpation over the penis. The penis may curve upward, downward of bend to a side.

Peyronie’s Disease is a very common men’s health issue that affects 6% to 10% of men between the ages of 40 and above. Peyronie’s disease is a medical condition that is characterized by the formation of fibrous plaques at the cover layer of the penis which results in bending or curvature of the penis toward the plaque during erection. As a result, during erection the penis is curved and may cause pain. This can be disfiguring and can affect your sex life.

The most common causes of Peyronie’s diseases is due to macro/micro trauma or injuries to the penis and its surrounding tissues. This may be due to vigorous intercourse or excessive masturbation. Once the scar tissue is formed, it may cause pain during erection and lead to erectile dysfunction. This can prevent proper sexual intercourse, resulting in embarrassment and frustration. The actual cause is of Peyronie’s is still unknown.

An older man especially over the age of 50s, has a higher risk with advancing age. Certain studies also link Peyronie’s disease with autoimmune disorders such as lupus.

Surgery is only recommended if medical therapy has failed.
