Where you can spend food stamp benefits — see the full list of retailers

NOT every store accepts Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, and it can be difficult to stay updated on which ones do.

To help, we explain where you can spend SNAP benefits and where you can use them for online purchases.

By already knowing that a store accepts SNAP benefits, you will save yourself time by only going to one store.

This will allow you to allocate the time that would have been spent visiting multiple grocery stores to other areas of your life such as your family, job searching or friends.

Where can I use my EBT card?

EBT cards can be used at quite a few superstores, grocery franchises and pharmacy chains.

These include the following:

To see what other stores EBT cards are accepted at, you can check the SNAP retailer locator tool.

The tool is simple to use, and all you need is the address of the store you are interested in shopping at.

SNAP recipients can also purchase groceries online for pickup or delivery.

However, not every state will allow SNAP recipients to do so, but more and more states are joining the trend.

For instance, Illinois has set up a LINK card. This card allows SNAP recipients to purchase groceries online at participating locations.

Below is a list of grocery stores participating in the LINK program.

  • Capri IGA
  • County Market
  • FairPlay Foods
  • Schnucks
  • Supermercados El Guero
  • Woodman’s Market

Some popular nationwide online retailers that accept SNAP EBT include Amazon, Walmart, BJs Wholesale Club and Aldi.

Recipients can also purchase groceries online with Instacart.

Yet, recipients can only use their benefits at participating supermarkets on the platform.

For instance, Meijer accepts SNAP EBT as a form of payment via Instacart, and Food Lion only accepts SNAP EBT via Instacart in select states.

How much do I get?

To receive SNAP benefits, you need to apply in the state in which you live.

There are certain requirements in order to be eligible, including resource and income limits.

For example, for a household of only one person, the gross monthly income must be no more than $1,396.

There are special SNAP rules for households with elderly or disabled members.

The money on EBT cards is meant to buy "eligible foods", and they are considered to be fruits, vegetables, beans, fish, meat, rice, bread, milk and cheese.

A SNAP recipient can even buy seeds and plants because they produce food.

EBT cards are used in all 50 states and territories, including Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands.
