Vintage German brilliance. Today, we're diving into one of the gems from the vaults of automotive history: the 1986 BMW Alpina B6 2.7. Before BMW brought Alpina into its fold in 2022, they shared an intoxicating dance since 1964, a relationship so tight-knit that BMW even honored warranties on Alpina-modified motors. This wasn’t your neighbour’s tuning shop. Oh no. Alpina was so much more, gaining a reputation as a full-blown manufacturer by '83. Fast and refined. A little less shouty than BMW M.
At its core, the B6 had an M20B25 engine, taken and bored out to a beefy 2.7-liters. And the folks at Alpina weren't content stopping there: custom Mahle pistons, an angrier camshaft, and a tweaked ignition system, all squeezing out a zesty 210 horsepower. That's 40 more than your run-of-the-mill 325i. Combined with a close-ratio five-speed gearbox and a meaner exhaust, this Bavarian beast was ready to pounce.
This isn't just any B6, though. It's number 40 out of a minuscule run of 67, a rare jewel that mainly treaded Japanese tarmac before gracing American shores around 2016. Visually, she’s a stunner - sporty spoilers, iconic Alpina wheels, and those oh-so-traditional gold stripes (which you'll still see today). Inside? An Alpina branded wheel, sport seats swathed in striped cloth, and all the fineries one expects from Bavaria's best.
