Madonna, Taylor Swift Message Goes Viral

Whether they are a Swiftie or not, most music fans will know who Taylor Swift is.

Whether it's due to her chart-topping songs or her The Eras Tour, which is breaking records, her music has a tremendous reach. However, one diehard Swiftie compared the "Cruel Summer" singer to pop legend Madonna, and the viral post has got internet users talking. Newsweek has contacted Madonna's publicist and Taylor Swift's talent agent via email for comment.

Swift is entertaining fans around the world in person on tour and in cinemas with the movie screening of the concert. If that wasn't enough, she is making headlines with her new beau, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. Swifties lost their mind when the singer and the football star were first spotted together in September. Now an item, Swift has appeared at several of Kelce's games, and he returned the favor by attending Swift's Eras Tour show in Argentina recently.

Now, fan account Pop Culturist has pitted Swift against Madonna in a post on X, formerly Twitter, on Sunday, saying that Madonna was way behind Swift and her music prowess. Some social-media users are not happy about it.

Posting a collage of the pop stars side by side, account @popculturist2 wrote: "Taylor Swift the queen of pop and it's not even up for debate.

"Madonna comes nowhere close to Taylor if we talk about influence, lyricism, and sales. She fell off after True Blue, and Taylor is at her peak 16 years into her career. No other artist in history could accomplish this," @popculturist2 added.

At the time of publishing, the post had been viewed over 1 million times, shared more than 750 times, and received over 100 comments.

Starting an unofficial online cage match between the two stars, it appeared most users agreed that Madonna helped pave the way for female pop stars such as Swift. However, there were hundreds of social-media users who simply reposted the controversial statement and appeared to agree with its message.

Fans of Madonna brushed away the snub, hitting back with comments such as "Taylor doesn't even come close to Madonna" and "This is embarrassing."

A social-media user wrote: "I don't have anything against Taylor but she doesn't deserve to be called Queen of Pop while the real Queen is still making history. Influence? Madonna has had over 40 years of pop culture to influence."

A third posted: "'Pop culturist' but you don't know what is pop culture. Madonna literally risks her career MANY TIMES for art/music. Something Taylor could never do. I don't hate Taylor but her fans need to be educated."

"Madonna paved the way for artists like her," someone added.

Not all Swifties agreed with the post. Defending Madonna, a Swift fan commented: "Nobody loves Taylor more than I. Like, I'm not actually joking when I say I'd die for her. However, Madonna is the blueprint. Madonna is the D, the N, and the A. People born in 2006 do not have any right weighing in on this. Go and do your homework."

Someone thought that even Swift herself would take issue with the comparison and posted: "Absurd. Taylor would even disagree with you."

Celebrating both stars, a music lover added: "There's room for everyone. You can talk about the successes of one person without the intent of discrediting others. The pitting women against each other trope has to stop."
