The First Generation of the Kia Rio Subcompact

At McGrath Kia in Hiawatha, we're thrilled to be able to offer Cedar Rapids drivers the fun, sporty, and functional Kia Rio sedan and 5-door hatchback. A new or used Rio is a great choice for anyone who wants an affordable and efficient small car. The Rio is in its third generation, but if you're shopping for a pre-owned car, a first-generation Rio would certainly serve you well. Here's a quick history of the model's first generation.

From 2000 to 2005

The Kia Rio replaced the Kia Pride as the subcompact in the Kia lineup. At the time of its release, it was the least expensive production car in the United States. The first Rio models were praised for their style and efficiency.

The first run of the Rio was offered in both sedan and 5-door hatchback configurations, starting in 2000. The hatchback was initially called the Rio Cinco in the United States. Both cars came with essentially the same hardware under the hood. The engine was a 1.5L four-cylinder that made 96 hp. In 2003, the Rio got a larger 1.6L four-cylinder good for 105 hp. Every version of the first-generation Rio got either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission.

The Rio received a facelift for the 2003 model year. In addition to the bigger engine, the interior and exterior received updated styling. After 2002, it also received an upgraded suspension system and upgraded brakes.

Overall, a first-generation Kia Rio would be a good choice for anyone looking for an affordable used subcompact.
