Interesting You Tube item on the effects of Precision Scheduled Railroading. Of course American railroading is hard to compare with European railroading, but some of the items mentioned do happen here also. For instance, the question of reporting safety risks to management and, if they don't want to follow up on these, reporting them to the safety authority. Lessons we can learn from the incident - Proper Bunker Management:Ensuring adequate fuel reserves to handle unexpected delays or emergencies. - Weather Monitoring:Continuously monitoring weather conditions and adjusting operations accordingly. - Anchor Maintenance:Regular checks and maintenance of anchors and chains to prevent fouling and ensure effective anchoring. - Emergency Preparedness:Having clear protocols and procedures for handling adverse weather conditions and potential equipment malfunctions. - Communication and Decision Making:Effective communication between the Master, bridge watchkeepers, and crew, along with timely and informed decision-making, are critical in such situations to minimize risks and ensure safety.

As we look at how hard it is to electrify our super tankers, with their multiple day voyages, we are given an opportunity to change how we think about the problem. Traditionalists will say, economies of scale, the larger ships we have the more containers we have per vessel and per captain. However with electrification the whole equation flips to asset utelization. It is very rare for a ship to voyage at full container capacity, and even more rare for every container to have cargo, as empty containers need to be filled in other ports. This gives us an opportunity for smaller batches of ships, which can use swappable batteries, or even barges with no engines to be towed by rechargeable tug boats, that can charge from offshore wind and solar stations. This breaks up a 70 day trip of a ship with fuel and an engine into 70 one day trips of tug boats, to fully electrify towed barge transit. So when people say that it is too difficult to electrify, they are thinking traditionally with 1:1 swaps of “what can replace the fuel in my engine”. When instead the question is really “how can I get a container from point A to point B at the lowest cost.” And the answer to that question is with electricity at high efficiency. Just as Intramotev and Parallel Systems are breaking up 2 mile long trains into individually powered platooning train cars, we can do the same with boats, as asset utilization is now the defining metric of buisness success instead of economies of scale where bigger is no longer better.

A ferry operator sent us a damper for overhaul the other day. And it’s a good job they did – as you can see from the image, the o-ring has worn a groove in the inner star. This’d be okay if the groove was no more than 2.5% of a cross-section of the o-ring. But it’s not. It’s double that, at 5%. We’ll need to bring it back to spec by metal spraying, as leaving it to get worse could cause greater problems and create significant risk. We’ll also need to replace the other o-ring – time has made it brittle, so it’s snapped in several places. The takeaway? Sticking to recommended maintenance intervals – regularly maintaining all your components ensures you spot any issues before they spiral out of control and require more extensive work.
