How to Master ChatGPT Prompting - 8 principles to dive deeper. On its surface, having discussions with tools like ChatGPT is simple. You type in a quick prompt, and it spits out an answer in a few seconds. This straightforward approach often produces lackluster results. It’s like we’ve all been handed key cards to a Tesla S Plaid, and driving school hasn’t been invented. For the last few months, I’ve been researching and experimenting with how to get the most out of this incredibly powerful model. Here’s an early and incomplete list of prompting principles that I’ve found helpful: 1. Start with a clear objective Clearly express what you seek, such as "I'm looking for background information on effective infographics for an article". 2. Ask open-ended questions Open-ended questions encourage deeper exploration and engagement. Begin your prompts with "How," "Why," or "What," such as "How could I improve team chemistry for a remote team in different time-zones?". 3. Provide Goldilocks context Give ChatGPT just context for it to generate valuable answers. A few sentences or bullet points are typically sufficient. Try not to overdo it, though. Add too much context; the AI will feed your words like an overeager parrot. 4. Introduce creative constraints Paradoxically, constraints can unleash creativity. Experiment with limiting answer length, format, tone, framework, or style. Try giving the AI a role such as “you’re a world-class expert on..”. 5. Request multiple perspectives To counter potential biases in ChatGPT's learning data, ask it to consider various viewpoints in its response. For example, "What is the right level of CEO compensation? Include arguments for both market-based pay and legislative caps." 6. Try thought experiments Dive into the creative depths of ChatGPT by engaging it in hypothetical scenarios. Try questions like, "Imagine a world in 2030 powered by abundant superintelligent AI assistants. Discuss both positive and negative implications for our societies, relationships, and businesses." 7. Encourage comparisons Comparisons can help us make sense of complex concepts. Ask ChatGPT to contrast ideas or strategies like “compare the merits of paid and organic reach for a sustainability non-profit”. 8. Iterate and deepen Use ChatGPT's initial response as a conversation starter, refining or elaborating on its answers as needed. Take advantage of its ability to remember the context within a conversation thread to improve your work further. How can [product/service] help you?" * Instruction-based: "Provide a step-by-step guide on how to [achieve a specific goal]." Writing Styles: * Conversational: "Hey there! I'm curious, could you share some tips for [topic]?" * Informative: "Explore the top strategies to enhance [specific area] and achieve remarkable results." * Inspirational: "Unleash your creativity and discover new possibilities with [product/service]." Tones: * Professional: "As an industry expert, shed light on the emerging trends in [industry]." * Playful: "Looking for a dash of fun? Let's uncover the quirky side of [topic] together!" * Thought-provoking: "Challenge conventional thinking: How can we revolutionize [industry/area]?" By following these tips, you can leverage the power of ChatGPT for various applications.
