When you need a new MSD, the first decision you must make is its size. To determine the right size, you must consider factors such as the number of people on board, hours of use, required certifications, and types of waste the MSD will handle. Just as there are many vessels and offshore rigs, different types of marine sanitation devices suit various boats. Having the wrong MSD might seem trivial, but that's not true. Having the wrong MSD can result in: - Overloading your system (leading to smelly, unsafe conditions) - Coast Guard fines - Frustrating and time-consuming maintenance projects - High replacement costs Read more about why it may be time to replace your MSD here: https://lnkd.in/gMYDp_YH H2O Incorporated LLC is a trusted manufacturer of high-quality, long-lasting, high-performance MSDs. Even high-quality marine sanitation devices have an expiration date, and regularly updating or upgrading your system is crucial for the health and safety of your vessel and crew. In our most recent blog post, the H2O Incorporated team discusses three reasons you need to replace your marine sanitation device (MSD) today. REASON THREE If you've been waiting to buy an MSD, more durable options may be available now. For instance, a carbon or stainless steel model will be more resilient to hot and cold temperatures, making it last longer. When buying your next system, consider upgrading to a bigger size or better material so your investment will last for years to come. Even high-quality marine sanitation devices have an expiration date, and regularly updating or upgrading your system is crucial for the health and safety of your vessel and crew. REASON TWO MSDs are rated for a specific volume of use, and if your operation has grown significantly since the last time you updated your system, you might be overloading it. This can lead to blockages and harm the system. You must consider whether your current system can handle your growing needs. Even high-quality marine sanitation devices have an expiration date, and regularly updating or upgrading your system is crucial for the health and safety of your vessel and crew. REASON ONE While you may be tempted to troubleshoot and fix your old MSD to save money, replacing individual parts like the regenerative blower or discharge pump can be costly and time-consuming. Moreover, there comes a point when replacing old parts will no longer make the system work like new. It's best to consult with an MSD expert to determine whether maintenance is effective or whether you need a new system. New marine sanitation regulations have been implemented in the US, effective as of 2024.    Under the Vessel Incidental Discharge Act (VIDA), vessel owners must have a U.S. Coast Guard-certified Marine Sanitation Device (MSD) on board, and all sewage must be treated appropriately before discharge.    A Type I or Type II MSD must treat all boat sewage within three miles from shore. Beyond three miles, all sewage needs to be stored in a holding tank or a Type III MSD.    Boat sewage discharge, treated or untreated, is prohibited in freshwater lakes and reservoirs, rivers that cannot be navigated by interstate vessel traffic, and no-discharge zones.    The standards for incidental discharges from non-recreational, non-Armed Forces vessels must be at least as stringent as the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 2013 Vessel General Permit (VGP) requirements.   Read more about these important changes in our latest blog post, "2024 BOAT SEWAGE REGULATIONS: WHAT BOAT OWNERS NEED TO KNOW" here: https://lnkd.in/g8eR4qn6

According to the latest update under the Vessel Incidental Discharge Act (VIDA), graywater regulations have been revised, and it is now mandatory for commercial boats to comply with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines before discharging graywater. The EPA guidelines help to determine whether it is safe to discharge graywater into the waterways. This regulation is put in place to protect the aquatic ecosystem and prevent the contamination of water resources.   On the other hand, for personal or recreational crafts, there are no specific regulations concerning graywater. However, it is still advisable to take measures to minimize the amount of graywater generated on board and dispose of it safely. Graywater refers to wastewater generated from sinks, showers, and other non-toilet sources. Although graywater is less harmful than blackwater, which comes from toilets, it can still contain chemicals, nutrients, and pathogens that can harm aquatic life and the environment.   Therefore, it is essential to be mindful of the impact of graywater on the waterways and take necessary precautions to minimize the discharge of graywater into the environment.   Read more about these important changes in our latest blog post, "2024 BOAT SEWAGE REGULATIONS: WHAT BOAT OWNERS NEED TO KNOW" here: https://lnkd.in/g8eR4qn6
