 Peter Sis

Peter Sís is a Czech-born illustrator, writer, and sometimes animator and director. Born in 1949 and growing up in Czechoslovakia, he moved to America after producing a short film Hlavy in 1980, which won the Golden Bear Award at the West Berlin Film Festival.

His career in children’s books is prolific – he has been awarded The New York Times Book Review Best Illustrated Book of the Year award seven times; Sís has also received Caldecott honors for his 1996 book, Starry Messenger, his 1998 book Tibet Through The Red Box, and his 2007 work, The Wall: Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain, which also received ALA's 2008 Robert Silbert Medal for the most distinguished informational book for young readers.

In 2012, as recognition of his substantial career, he was awarded the biennial Hans Christian Andersen Medal by the International Board on Books for Young People for his "lasting contribution" as a children's illustrator.
