From the people who gave us “Consider This Sh*t,” the unforgettable For Your Consideration ad promoting James Franco‘s performance in Spring Breakers, comes another awards season promotion you won’t soon forget: a website that allows you to upload a photo of yourself or someone else and, with the click of only a few buttons, convert it into a full-fledged For Your Consideration ad.
What inspired A24 Films to create the site? A desire to remind people about Ex Machina, Alex Garland‘s critically acclaimed sci-fi indie that came out in April, and specifically the Golden Globe-nominated supporting performance given in the film by Alicia Vikander as Ava, a humanoid robot with artificial intelligence — and a gift for sketching. (See the clip at the top of this post.)
The 27-year-old Swede is getting tons of Oscar buzz for her other great performance from 2015, opposite Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl, for which she also is being pushed in the supporting category — but for which the Hollywood Foreign Press Association nominated her for a best actress (drama) Golden Globe.
Meanwhile, she’s been accumulating quite a bit of acknowledgment for Ex Machina, as well. In addition to the Globe nom, she won the best supporting actress prizes of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the DC Area Film Critics Association, and she was nominated for the best supporting actress prizes of the Detroit Film Critic Society and the San Francisco Film Critics Circle, and the best actress prize of the European Film Awards and Empire Awards.
In other words, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that the Academy would elevate Vikander’s Danish Girl performance to lead and nominate her in supporting for Ex Machina — double-nominations have happened on 11 occasions in the past.
I’d also keep an eye out for Garland’s original screenplay and the film’s visual effects work, which might get some Academy acknowledgment of their own.
