2019 Chevy Silverado crew cab short box to be bigger, lighter, cheaper

The 2019 Silverado LT crew cab pickup short box with 4X4 will be bigger, more capable and more fuel-efficient, yet has a starting sticker price that will be about $700 less than the outgoing model.

Chevrolet has not given a date yet for when the 2019 pickup goes on sale other than to say it will be later this year. It will have a more spacious interior and cargo area along with higher towing and payload capabilities.

Its starting price goes to $44,095 from $44,795. Despite the lower price, the 2019 Silverado LT crew cab offers new standard equipment including a new 2.7-liter turbo engine with 22 percent more torque than the 4.3-liter V6 engine it replaces, an eight-speed automatic transmission, stop-start technology and active aero shutters, Chevrolet said in a media statement.

The next-gen Silverado is also larger than the outgoing model. The Silverado crew cab short box has 1.2 inches more total width, 1.5 inches more total height, 1.7 inches more total length and 3.9 inches more wheelbase.

As a result, the Silverado offers an additional 3 inches of cab length for all configurations, and up to 4 cubic feet more interior volume.

Yet, Chevrolet has taken up to 450 pounds off the 2019 Silverado compared with the outgoing model through "advanced manufacturing and the use of mixed materials," the company said.

Models equipped with the 5.3-liter V8 and rear-wheel drive offer an estimated 17 mpg city, 23 highway and 19 combined. Models equipped with four-wheel drive and the 6.2-liter V8 offer an estimated 16 mpg city, 20 highway and 17 combined. Estimates for the other engines, including the all-new 2.7-liter Turbo and new Duramax 3.0-liter Turbo-Diesel, are not yet available. 

Chevrolet will also offer more choices with the 2019 Silverado lineup, including six engine-transmission combinations that give customers different combinations of performance, efficiency and value, as well as increased towing and payload capabilities:

The High Country trim will cost $1,000 more than the outgoing model. It starts at $54,495 for the upscale pickup.

High Country offers new standard equipment, including the 5.3-liter V8 engine with new Dynamic Fuel Management, push-button start, stop-start technology, active aero shutters, Lane Change Alert, Side Blind Zone Alert, Advanced Trailering System, enhanced LED exterior lighting, dual exhaust outlets and class-exclusive power up/down tailgate.
