Acura is bringing back the ZDX nameplate for its first all-electric vehicle, a battery-powered crossover. The original ZDX was discontinued in 2013, but is now revived as an all-new electric SUV.

Officially revealed Thursday at Monterey Car Week in California, the new ZDX is based on the brand’s concept, the Precision EV, which was first on display at last year’s annual event. Leaning into its premium branding, the all-new ZDX will include Google built-in on its 11.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 18-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system—a first for Acura—and AcuraWatch 360+ with Hands Free Cruise for advanced safety and driver assistance. The ZDX Type S will be the first Acura with the hands-free assistive tech available on 400,000 miles of roads.

The base A-Spec is available as a single or dual-motor with 340 horsepower, while the more powerful Type S will feature dual motors making 500 horsepower. The Type S will have bigger 22-inch wheels and Brembo front brakes. Both can tow up 3,500 pounds.

Ultium in an Acura

Both variants use a 102 kWh battery. The battery platform is General Motors’ Ultium, which is also used for GM’s Chevrolet Blazer EV and Equinox EV and Honda’s upcoming Prologue EV. There’s a reason all these compact SUVs are reminiscent of each other.

The Type S, while more powerful, will only reach 288 miles on a single charge, while the single motor A-Spec will have a 325-mile range. The dual-motor A-spec drops to 315 miles.

Charging is expected to be quick with DC fast charging up to 190 kW rates. Acura estimates 81 miles of range in 10 minutes. At home Acura has established the Acura Home Electrification marketplace to shop for home charging devices and installers. For public charging, Acura has its own app to find stations and pay. Acura, through Honda, is part of the consortium of automakers developing a high-speed charging network in North America from 2024.

Concept Design Realized

While clearly an Acura SUV from the front end, the low-lying, long wheelbase ZDX brings some elements of the Precision EV concept into production—namely the Double Apex Blue Pearl exterior color to the Type S. A yellow-gold Tiger Eye Pearl will also be available on the ZDX’s Type S.

Inside, Acura promises “high-end materials” to complement the suite of tech features on the 11.3-inch screen and the driver cockpit with its 11-inch screen.

How Much Will the 2024 Acura ZDX Cost? When Will it Be Available?

Specifics will be hammered out closer to production, but Acura anticipates the base, rear-wheel A-Spec to start in the $60,000 range, while the all-wheel drive Type S to start in the $70,000 range.

The first deliveries are expected in early 2024, but online reservations will be available soon. The ZDX will be sold through a new digital sales process.
