Overview
One of today's more affordable small luxury SUVs, the 2024 Infiniti QX50 is also a solid value. A generous list of standard features, a roomy interior with high-quality materials and trim, and ample cargo space make the QX50 both posh and practical. Available all-wheel drive and a relatively high 8.6 inches of ground clearance — similar to a Subaru Forester's — also give the QX50 legitimate snow mobility and modest trail capability. But the Infiniti comes up short in other areas, most notably its sluggish engine and transmission pairing. It also doesn't have quite as cushy a ride quality as its luxury rivals. The QX50 makes for a sensible buy, if not an inspired one.

Edmunds spotlight: Content with competence
The QX50 received several useful updates last year and carries into 2024 with no major changes. Alas, the QX50 could really use a wallop of fresh power and a retuned, more responsive transmission to better compete with its lusher, sportier rivals. Then again, the QX50 is pleasantly competent, even borderline decadent with the Autograph trim's suede headliner, quilted leather and maple accents. It offers a raft of active safety features and even a sporty, coupe-style twin, the QX55, reviewed separately. You could do worse than the QX50 for the price, but better choices are within reach.
Competitors to consider
The Genesis GV70 is one of the best and newest small luxury SUVs, and it beats out the QX50 with better performance, a stylish, modern interior and a class-leading warranty. It costs more but delivers more. The Acura RDX also costs more (but less than the Genesis), but lively handling, an eager engine and standard all-wheel drive make a strong case. How does the QX50 drive? The QX50 lacks the polish we expect from a luxury SUV. Power isn't necessarily the problem. At the Edmunds test track, our QX50 sprinted from 0 to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds, which is an average time for a small luxury SUV with a base engine. It's all about how the QX50 goes about its business. For one, it's slow to respond. Press on the gas and it takes a beat or two before everything really gets going. This quality can get annoying when you want a quick burst of power, like when you need to pass a slow-moving vehicle. Around turns, the QX50 is competent, but nothing about its character inspires you to drive harder.

How comfortable is the QX50? The QX50 is decently comfortable. The front seats strike a nice balance of plush and supportive, with enough bolstering to hold you in place around corners. The seat heating and ventilation functions work quickly and powerfully, as does the climate system. Overall noise control is great inside the cabin as well.
The one area we don't love is the ride quality. It feels less settled than the BMW X3 or Mercedes-Benz GLC on bumpy roads. Around town, the Infiniti fails to iron out everyday road imperfections like a luxury SUV should.

How’s the interior? The cabin is roomy and has plenty of space but lacks the modern elegance of its competitors. The QX50 is low enough to make hopping inside an easy task for most people. Finding the right driving position shouldn't be a problem — the steering wheel has ample vertical adjustment and can telescope forward and back. Forward visibility is fantastic over the hood, but the rearward view could be better. It's hampered by the chunky rear roof pillars.

How’s the tech? Infiniti's two-screen infotainment system is now completely outdated, and after spending time with it, you realize that it creates more problems than it solves. The bottom display, in particular, is largely redundant and unnecessary. The system's reaction time is fine and it offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but it's lacking any real intuitiveness.

How’s the storage? The cargo area's ample size and helpful features really stand out here. There's plenty of space, and that's even before you fold the back seat or use the in-floor storage. This is one area where the Infiniti holds a competitive advantage over its closest rivals. Storage for smaller items isn't quite as generous as the cargo area is, but it will work fine for most people shopping for an SUV this size. Loading up a child safety seat will be made more challenging by the LATCH anchors tucked between the cushions.

How’s the fuel economy? Infiniti likes to tout the QX50's innovative powertrain, but we expected the fuel economy to be better. The EPA estimates the all-wheel-drive QX50 gets 25 mpg in combined city/highway driving, but we managed only 23.8 mpg on our mixed-driving standardized test route. That figure is lower than we'd expect and worse than other four-cylinder SUVs like the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 and the Audi Q5.

Is the QX50 a good value? While it isn't as sporting as the Germans, the QX50 delivers on the comfort and practicality front, justifying its similar pricing. Be careful with option package selection because some of them are pricey. The QX50's warranty is on par for the class with four-year/60,000-mile basic coverage and six-year/70,000-mile powertrain coverage. There is no free scheduled maintenance, unlike what some other luxury brands offer.

While the QX50 doesn't have any dynamic missteps outside of the transmission, there's not much to get excited over either. It's roundly competent and doesn't shrink away from a curving road. Fun doesn't really enter the equation.
Which QX50 does Edmunds recommend?
If you don't mind its dark exterior trim and wheels — included with whichever exterior paint you choose — the Sport trim strikes the best balance of features and price. It builds on the Luxe trim features, with upgrades such as premium leather upholstery, heated and cooled front seats, navigation and a Bose audio system.

2020 INFINITI QX50 LUXE 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo CVT)
This car was not even on my radar. I thought it was too small for my 6'7" husband, but the salesperson told me it had been redesigned and that the inside had more room! Indeed it did! We tried over a dozen cars from luxury to large SUV's. This 2020 QX 50 places more items on it's sleek dashboard and leaves more leg and shoulder room in the cabin of the vehicle. The power seats have … so many adjustments that my husband has as much headroom as in did in our late model Mercedes 450! The seats are comfy, the technology is sweet, it has Apple Play, blind spot warning, lane warnings and the engine has pep!! I was used to a 8 cylinder Jeep and Benz and this sweet ride is just as smooth and much easier on the wallet for gas! It looks small on the outside but don't let that fool you! The back space is very big and the back seats have a 60/40 split! Infiniti gives you road service and live traffic for four years. I have had no buyers remorse and each time I drive the car I am happier than the time before!

My current lease was almost up and I decided I wanted an suv this time around. I liked the look of the QX50 but I didn't like all the poor reviews of the 2019 model on Edmunds. I decided to test drive the 2020 model to see if any of the problems of the 2019 might have been corrected. I was impressed with the ride and size but really impressed with the power of the new engine. I had no … problem with the cvt transmission at low or high speeds. My current car is a three litre 300 twin turbo which I love, yet I see no noticeable differance in power. Yes, I did have a problem with the light steering feel but I changed the setting from standard to sport in the settings option screen and it tightened up to my liking. I really was surprised to like this suv. I live in the city so I never expect good gas mileage from any vehicle and this one is no different. You are always stopping for lights or stop signs so there is just no way you are going to see good mileage. On the highway it's just the opposite. I'm getting almost 30 MPG and the ride is great. The power is very acceptable at any speed. I also found no power lag going up hills which many complained of with the cvt transmission. Many nice features for the money. All in all I'm very happy and surprised with this suv.

2020 INFINITI QX50 SENSORY 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo CVT)
I was in the market for an SUV as I had only ever driven coupe vehicles. I had test driven the Inifinti QX50, Acura RDX, Audi A3 & Nissan Murano (in that order). All I can say is how the QX50 really set the bar high for the others. It's a smooth ride. We've already taken it up to the cottage and it was dream on both the highway and side roads. The seats are also so comfortable. The … BOSE stereo system and panoramic roof is also a beautiful touch - it adds a lot of natural light inside the car (my interior is black). A full tank gets around 600km. Only dislike is the gas requirement is premium. It was a pricey purchase, but I don't regret it for a minute, I also plan to have it for as long as possible.
