Tired of having other pickups kick sand in your face? Want to drive something that will dwarf even the most HD of the heavy-duty trucks at the local mall? Here’s the answer: the 2008 International MXT, which stands for Most Extreme Truck. It’s a pickup from the central casting of an automotive monster movie—and painted a menacing shade of flat black to add an extra layer of intimidation. It’s listed in a classified ad on eBay Motors for $91,800.00.
The International MXT 4X4 is Huge
Park the MXT beside a Chevy Silverado HD and you’ll notice that it’s significantly bigger in every dimension. Eight feet wide, and eight feet tall, the MXT also outweighs a full-ton pickup by thousands of pounds. It checks in with a curb weight of 10,500 pounds in total. Towing capacity is rated at 15,500 pounds. This feat is made possible by its V8 turbodiesel engine pushing out 325 horsepower and 580 pound-feet of torque. Permanent four-wheel drive is also in the picture, as is 4,000 pounds of payload in the truck bed, all riding on 20-inch wheels.
International has been around a long time, but you’d have to go back more than three decades to find the last time the brand produced a regular line-up of trucks and SUVs aimed outside the commercial sphere. Also known as International Harvester, the company was purchased by Navistar International in 1986. (The International series is actually a Navistar product marketed under the International name.) Needless to say, the MXT bears little resemblence to the humble Scout.
International MXT Roots
The MXT can trace its roots back to a military project for the British army. A civilian version of the vehicle appeared on the market in 2006 for a brief two-year run. The vehicle rides on a chassis that is aimed at medium-duty trucking. Think ambulances and box trucks and you get an idea of how hardcore the frame and underpinnings of the International MXT really are.
Rare Beastly Unicorns
These trucks, when brand new, traded in the $90,000 range. This explains why you see so few of them on the road. There’s also the fact that this kind of truck attracts a huge amount of attention. Maybe it’s hard to justify owning one if you don’t need its amazing hauling capacity or off-road capability, but if you’re in the market for an ultra-rare go-anywhere tow rig, the big bad MXT is a great way to set yourself apart from the rest of the pack.
