Her past comes back to haunt her when recovering alcoholic detective Wade Handler (Benjamin Bratt) is assigned to Embry's case. As Katie struggles to finish her thesis and secure a job with a prestigious firm in the city, she must contend with the reappearance of Embry, who seems intent on destroying her life.Gaghan's stylish picture, shot by acclaimed cinematographer Matthew Libatique, owes an obvious debt to classic thrillers from the 1970s (he even goes so far as to have Holmes sing a rendition of the theme to ROSEMARY'S BABY, ala Roman Polanski and his starlet, Mia Farrow). Zooey Deschanel (MUMFORD, THE GOOD GIRL) delivers yet another scene-stealing performance as Katie's snide, sarcastic friend. Young Cast make this movie believable
No-one save for Benjamin Bratt had many films experience when this movie premiered in 2002.But with an eye for detail and unique camera angles,first time director Stephen Gaghan brings a crafty slice of film noir to fruition in Abandon. Katie Holmes plays Katie,the girlfriend of Embry Larkin, a missing student at a Ivy league type university.Benjamin Bratt plays Handler,the detective sent to find Embry,heir to a large fortune. Embry has left no clues to his whereabouts,so Handler must question the students who knew him best and try to find the missing young man. Fine performances are also turned in by Gabriel Mann as Harrison Hobart and Zooey Deschanel as Samantha,Katie's best friend.
