We're getting pretty used to Marvel superheroes jumping from comic book pages to the screen (and raking in the box office bucks while they're at it), but which of those characters makes it into the real(ish) world most intact?
Here's how those famous faces compare to those comic book originals, from the indistinguishable all the way down:
16. Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man
As far as we're concerned, Downey Jr pretty much is Tony Stark at this point, from the smug demeanour to the finely chiselled beard. Perfection!
15. Chris Hemsworth as Thor
We didn't believe it could be possible before we saw Thor in 2011, but all Chris Hemsworth really needs is the winged helmet and the illusion would be complete.
14. Chris Evans as Captain America
He's had a ropey costume or two, but the best ones make Chris Evans look like he just jumped fresh off the page, with just enough tweaks to make the whole look work.
13. Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange
It's all in the beard.
12. Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow
The red hair and black catsuit are easy, but Johansson brings some attitude that makes this more than just cosplay.
11. Dave Bautista as Drax
We're giving them a pass on this, because though Drax was technically redesigned in recent years, it came long before Bautista was cast. For reference, he originally sported this racy little number.
10. Mark Ruffalo as Dr Bruce Banner
Lovely Mr Ruffalo doesn't bear much of a resemblance to the Hulk, but he fits the bookish Bruce Banner down to a T.
9. Don Cheadle as War Machine
It's all in the styling, and Marvel got it right. He doesn't look much like Terrence Howard though, does he?
8. Paul Rudd as Ant-Man
Scott Lang is fairly nondescript, if we're honest, but the costume is a decent real-world update on the comic-book classic.
7. Zoe Saldana as Gamora
Zoe Saldana is the go-to actress for playing colourful aliens (blue for Avatar , green for Guardians), and her take on Gamora captures the spirit of the Most Dangerous Woman in the Universe without taking on the skull motif or presumed need for industrial-strength tit tape.
6. Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Quicksilver
It feels like they got somewhere down the line towards the classic lightning bolt and pseudo-Wolverine hairdo, but then lost their nerve along the way.
5. Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye
Marvel fortunately/tragically (delete as appropriate) failed to commit to the absurdity of the traditional Hawkeye look.
4. Anthony Mackie as the Falcon
What?! No spandex? No armlets and weird mask thing? What's going on with Anthony Mackie's Falcon?
3. Chris Pratt as Star-Lord
Peter Quill has had many a look over the decades, none of which ever came close to the Star Wars-y coolness of Chris Pratt's movie costume.
2. Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch
We can't really blame Marvel for not going down the red lingerie route, but dammit, if we don't miss that crazy headdress just a little bit.
1. Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury
This is a complicated one. The original Nick Fury (created back in 1963) was decidedly white. In 2001 - in the alternate reality Ultimate Marvel universe - a black version of the superspy was introduced who specifically said that Sam Jackson would play him in a film. Then Jackson was cast in the role. Then the original Nick Fury was replaced with the black Nick Fury Jr.
It's all very meta. But whatever the case, no one would deny that Jackson has completely made the character his own.
NB: A lot of the comic book characters are looking A WHOLE LOT more like their movie versions these days. We're looking at you Star-Lord, Hawkeye and Gamora.
