Thousands of Australian men have been thrown a curve in their downstairs department - with a quarter of all males down under not happy with the way their penises look.

Ten per cent of Australian men suffer from Peyronie's disease, a chronic inflammatory condition which causes a curved penis.

It develops when a penis tries to heal itself after being damaged, causing scar tissue to form in an unusual way.

A study conducted by the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand will be presented at a meeting in Melbourne on Saturday, news.com.au reported.

The study found one in sex men experienced pain when they had an erection, while more than 25 per cent are unhappy with the look of their erect penis.

One in five are bothered when they have sex, and reported difficulties in having intercourse.

Professor Eric Chung, the author of the study, said men with a curved penis offer suffer from physical and mental distress.

'Having a curved erection can make it difficult to have penetrative sex, it can cause pain to the man or their partner. Plus it can affect blood flow so it may cause erectile dysfunction,' he said.

'This is a very taboo subject. You're not going to see many people sharing that they have a penile curvature.'

Most sufferers of Peyronie's disease have a 30 to 60 degree curve in their penis.

Professor Chung said men living with the disease can find it depressing.

'I do have guys who see me saying "My marriage broke down because of my penile curvature" or "I'm not able to have sex with my wife or have children, because the curvature is causing me pain" or "I'm causing my partner pain".

'It's a condition that has a lot of implications. Lots of men with it aren't able to conceive in the normal way.'

Professor Chung will present findings from the study at a conference in Lisbon, Portugal next week.
