1929 Ford Model A Murray Town Sedan

1929 Ford Model A Murray Town Sedan

In 1929, Ford built its own body along with 2 custom body builders, Murray and Briggs. This one being a Murray. Murray built a slightly more streamlined and fancier hard-wired car for Ford; readily identified by the slight window arch on the front door and smooth cowl to hood design.

Movie tone news, dateline Hollywood: Rin Tin Tin wins Best Actor Academy Award. Today the cost of a loaf of bread rose to 12 cents, and a gallon of gas 21 cents. It would not last long though as the stock market was about to crash. And dateline Morgantown, PA we have for consignment, and as close to Concours as one can get, a 1929 Ford Model A Murray Town Sedan. The beneficiary of a complete and meticulous attention to detail frame off restoration.

Exterior
All laser straight steel painted in Vermilion Red which will beg your eyes to dive in this deep end of the Vermillion pool! Perfectly curved fenders are painted in deep black, and my eyes are preparing for another deep dive! A pristine running board attaches the fenders. Some play with color where the black surrounds the passenger compartment and there is a black vinyl roof center. The Vermillion is framing the windows all around. Glass is all excellent and etched roses are within the wing windows. From the polished flying quail hood ornament, to the chromed radiator surround and side mounted headlights, two bar bumper to the black leather trunk strapped to the back of the car behind the spare and split 2 bar rear bumpers, this car screams elegance and perfection. Even the 21 inch black painted wire wheels wrapped in new wide whitewall tires are perfect, no runs, drips or errors. Hee Haw!

Interior
Grabbing on to the french curved shiny door handles and giving them a turn, we are in custom gray mohair heaven, just like 1929. Nicely padded door panels with a storage pouch and shiny handles within this gray field, the sills have been painted black for contrast. Slipping in front and resting on the wide tuck and roll overstuffed bench seat, I can firmly grab the bakelite wheel which is polished and has chromed center hub, and chromed timing and throttle levers, and even sports a turn signal lever. Upfront a black topped and Vermillion front panel curve across after the windshield, which flips out for more airflow. In the center is the Ford “mask” style, (think of Edvard Munch “The Scream! painting), all chromed with perfectly restored levers and gauges. Just below this panel is an APCO Temperature gauge just to monitor the rebuilt engine. Floors are in black vinyl and not carpeted. In back another overstuffed bench with armrests and buttons in the mid back with gray pristine carpeting flooding the floors back here. Roll shades are on for privacy. The headliner is perfect and the lighting for the interior works. Cue the Charleston!

Drivetrain
A numbers matching rebuilt 201ci 4-cylinder engine with an original build date of August 1929 sits under the front cowled central hinged hood. A new Zenith 1-barrel carburetor feeds this green painted power plant. Supple hoses and belts and electrics are all sorted out, and all's well for this mill which puts out 40hp. On the back is a 3 speed manual transmission and the rear axle weighs in at 3.70 gear ratio. This engine has got moxie.

Undercarriage
Frame off means perfection and this Model A does not disappoint. Black framing with Vermillion floor pans can be viewed, and mechanical drum brakes are all around. Leaf springs all around and a clean exhaust and it's off to the ballroom dance. I hear Frankie Trumbauer 's band is playing tonite!

Drive-Ability
A treat to look at and definitely a driver, this fully restored automobile leaves no stone unturned and runs fantastically. Even the mechanical drum brakes are awesome, and attention to detail is unmatched.

I'm going to drop a dime that may be obvious by now but as the consignor states and I tend to agree wholeheartedly, this is one of THE nicest Model A's in the country. All you have to do is come up with the scratch and you too can be off to the wingding! Yowza!
