Lu chomps down on a piece of pumpkin, part of the items that make up his 64th birthday. The other items of his "fruit" cake include watermelons, gourds and berries frozen in ice.

Friday was a special day for Lu, the hippopotamus who lives at Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park in Homosassa. It was his 64th birthday and he celebrated it as he does every year with a birthday “cake” made up of watermelon, pumpkin, gourds and two bucket-sized ices filled with berries. He also had a bucket of kibble-like pellets that served as an appetizer before the “main course.”
