The name PYRENACANTHA MALVIFOLIA was given by the representative of the family Icacinaceae – Heinrich Gustav Adolf Engler in 1893. This caudiciform plant is found in Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania, growing in fine grit on hill-sides with little water and lots of sun. The vines grow to fifteen metres or more in length and the caudex up to 1.5 meters in diameter. The flowers are greenish.
