The Big Bertha of Korean minivans, the SsangYong Rodius, is entering the New Year in Britain with an updated diesel engine, while keeping the same looks and a low (for its size) starting price (OTR) of £15,995.

Lurking behind the Rodius’ very Mercedes-Benz-like chrome grille is SsangYong’s latest 2.0-liter e-XDi Euro 5 diesel engine that generates a maximum output of 153hp (155PS) and peak torque of 360Nm (265 lb-ft) delivered between 1,500rpm and 2,800rpm.

According to SsangYong, the 2013 Rodius returns a fuel economy of up to 38.7 mpg UK (32.2mpg US or 7.3 lt/100km) on the Combined Cycle.

Buyers have the choice of a standard six-speed manual gearbox or a Mercedes-Benz-sourced five speed T-Tronic automatic transmission.

The seven-seater minivan that stretches to over five meters in length (about 16.5 feet) is available in three trim levels named S, ES and EX, all of which are equipped with electric windows, fully automatic climate control, Kenwood audio and Bluetooth system, ABS, EBD, ESP and now, ISOFIX child seat anchorages for the middle row, as standard.

The ES introduces heated leather front seats, 16 inch alloy wheels and rear privacy glass, while the flagship EX model adds an on demand four wheel drive system and standard automatic transmission.

“As with all our cars, the new Rodius is keenly priced for the current tough economic conditions but also comprehensively equipped,” commented Paul Williams, CEO of SsangYong Motor UK. “From just £15,995, that’s not only a lot of car for the money but it is also backed by our own 5 year limitless mileage warranty.”
