Chrysler's idea of ​​developing a retro car dates back to 1990. In 1993, the Prowler started out as a concept car that was shown at the North American International Auto Show that year. The public reacted enthusiastically and Chrysler investigated whether serial production was feasible. In 1994 the model was again at the same motor show where it again received enthusiastic reactions. In April that year, work started on a first prototype. In September, the green light was given for series production. Conner Avenue Assembly was readied for production. In early 1996, the arrival of the Prowler was announced. In July that year, the first eighteen hand-built test units were also produced. In January 1997 the Prowler comes into production, or in very limited numbers. That year, 457 were hand-built, of which 396 were sold in North America. No Prowlers were built before 1998. However, a new Prowler was presented in Detroit for model year 1999. From January 1998 to July 1999, 3921 units were produced, all for sale in model year 1999. For model year 2000, 2746 Prowlers were made and for 2001 3142. Then - following the discontinuation of the Plymouth brand - the end of the Plymouth Prowler announced. From January 2001, the model continued as the identical Chrysler Prowler. A total of 8,532 Prowlers were built under the Plymouth brand. Until February 15, 2002, the last day of production, 1436 Chrysler Prowler's were built. The total Prowler production thus came to 11,702 units.
