Working well with Thinkpad T520

Working well with Thinkpad T520
Like others, I got this card to modernize my Thinkpad T520. The card installed easily, as well as the provided driver from the CD. I've tested it on both Windows 8.1 and 10 (21h2). I'm deducting one star, because like others have pointed out, it is possible to insert a USB upside down in these ports. The ports also don't feel as though they "catch" the USBs, they just sort of slide in and out. They sit fairly secured, though. I had an issue at first where the ports felt rather stiff, and so removing devices from the ports would slide the card out some. This quickly loosened, though, and its staying firmly in place. Be advised that if switching between express cards is your thing, this thing is not easy to remove once inserted. That's not a problem in my case. Another thing worth noting. Windows gives me a balloon popup in the taskbar advising me to use a faster USB port. I thought the card was being reduced to 2.0 speeds, however when I ran DiskMark on the same PNY flash drive, the Express Card was significantly faster than the T520's 2.0 ports. 30 mb/s vs 100 or so. I'm satisfied overall.

Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2023
I kept my expectations low, as other reviews noted how flimsy the ports are, but was hoping the device would at least be functional. The moment I installed it into my Thinkpad T520, the machine slowed to a crawl, the mouse cursor becoming jittery and freezing every second when I tried to move it around on the screen. The moment I removed the card, the laptop started to function normally again. It never showed up in Device Manager either, so I'm concluding that the card itself is defective.

That's besides the fact that the card was an abnormally tight squeeze into the slot. Don't have that issue with other 34mm Expresscard devices I've used with this machine.

This first paragraph is an update to my original review. I have two issues with the card. First, I occasionally have trouble reading my external drive unless I reboot my computer. Second, usb connectors don't seat as tightly as they should and I have to be careful to not move around or I'll lose the connection and have to reboot. However, it is still a good, economical solution for my usb 3 issues.

My old Lenovo T430 laptop is an excellent performer that fills all of my needs. Of the scores of computers I have owned over the last 40 years, it is my favorite and I want to keep using it until it completely fails.

I recently started having problems reading an external hard drive through the computer's two USB 3.0 ports; however, it works fine (but slowly) on the USB 2.0 ports. One thing I noticed is that a microphone and thumb drives work on the 3.0's. I can also hear the hard drive run when plugged in, but it's pilot light is dimmer than when plugged into the USB 2.0. This leads me to believe that there is a power problem with the faster ports that is beyond my ability to troubleshoot and repair. I'm also not willing to potentially spend several hundred dollars to have it repaired. Fortunately, the computer has a 34mm ExpressCard slot which led me to a search for a USB 3.0 adapter that will fit it.

A quick search lead me to this and other USB 3.0 adapter cards. The highest rated one contains a single port, which is a problem since I occasionally need to plug in two external drives so that I can transfer very large files. Since I do not want to use the substantially slower 2.0 port, I took a chance on this adapter with its two ports.

It arrived on the promised date, packed with a miniature cdrom containing a needed driver. Here is my only complaint with the adapter card. When inserting it in the slot, it required enough effort to make me concerned that it was not fitting in correctly. Before committing myself, I double checked that it was properly positioned, then pushed it all of the way in. This is a typical card slot that should allow a card to be removed by pushing it so that it clicks and partially ejects. However, this fits too tightly to allow that action. I feel lucky that the card works properly since I will definitely have a problem if I ever need to remove it.

That problem aside, I tried to read a drive without installing the driver and as expected, it didn't work. With driver installed, the computer recognized the hard drive and I was able to fully access it. I also read and wrote a large file through the card and it appears to give speeds typical of 3.0.

There is one other issue that wasn't a problem for me, but may be for others. The driver was supplied on the cdrom and I did not see any reference for how to download it if the computer does not have a cd or dvd drive.

So, barring a future problem removing it, I am very pleased to say the adapter card resolved my USB 3.0 problem for only $24!

Immediately recognized by Win10. Performs exactly as desired. Brace the unit with a finger when removing a USB cable if thumb drive, as they fit very snug and can pull the whole unit out of the laptop!

Using this on a Lenovo ThinkPad W540, and installed drivers using the included disc with the DVD drive in my laptop.

This doesn't deserve 4 stars, it's really a 3 star product, especially at this pretty high price. It took a lot of pushing to get it to 'click' into the ExpressCard slot on my laptop, and once it was in there, the ports seemed like they were really loose. It takes very little effort to plug in and unplug any device you put in there, so I would probably not use this for data transfer as it's hard to depend on a connection that could be removed if it were bumped or tugged slightly.

That said, it *does* operate at USB 3.0 5Gbps speeds, so it technically does work as advertised, but at this price I would expect a better fit both into the laptop and with devices connected to it.

This'd be 5 stars if it was $9.99, which is really the value I would place on it.

I'll make this succinct. It's definitely a good product and works well. See below
1. For windows 7 and lower the drivers (included on a disc in the package) need to be installed. Also plug the device in first then install the drivers 2nd.
2. The Expresscard will get warm if anything is plugged into it for a long time (into the USBs) so just keep an eye out for the and don't keep things plugged in for a long time.

Product works well

Cheap and flimsy! Inserted and removed maybe four times before the casing crinkled and got stuck. Ugh. I eventually got it out, but I expected more for the $22 I spent on this garbage. I only had it for 3 months! The USB ports were loose fitting with every USB device I tried attaching to it. Some things (like thumb drives) could't even connect because the ExpressCard was so loose it couldn't hold them. JUNK!

5.0 out of 5 stars Works perfectly and instantly with Linux Mint and Toughbook CF-19

It arrived this morning so after unpacking it (huge amount of packing for such a tiny item) I pulled out my Panasonic Toughbook CF-19 and plugged it in.
After booting into Linux Mint 32 bit, I connected an external SSD drive and it just worked - copy tests showed good speeds so I am very happy with the 2 Port USB 3.0 to Express Card ExpressCard 34mnm
