The fourth season picks up after Beckett is shot and Montgomery is killed. We see that Beckett has undergone extensive surgery, and then takes a three-month leave to recover from her injuries. Much of the season's larger arc deals with Beckett trying to find out who shot her, as well as Castle and Beckett dealing with their feelings for each other. The big addition to the main cast this season is Penny Johnson Jerald (probably best known for the series 24) who plays Captain Victoria Gates. She is not a fan of Castle's "assistance" and generally makes life miserable for everyone. The season ends on another cliffhanger (although not the same as the season three cliffhanger) with the future of Beckett and Castle in the balance.
The season has a strong supporting and guest cast including Michael Dorn, Geoff Pierson, Jennifer Beals, Meghan Markle, and Tahmoh Penikett. There is also a mini Firefly reunion as well. For those who get the DVD set, the extras include commentary tracks on selected episodes, bloopers and outtakes, deleted scenes, a feature on the stunts, and a couple of other behind-the-scenes features. A good amount of material for those who like the extras.
Overall, the series continues to be strong. The show has a good balance of stand-alone case-of-the-week stories and does a good job stretching out the larger storylines. It continues to be well written and acted, and all of the actors do a great job with their roles. Fillion and Katic continue to either have or fake good chemistry. Most fans of the show probably know the rumors that the two could not stand each other by the time the series ended, so if any of that animosity had started at this point, it was not apparent when watching the episodes. If you are a fan of the prior seasons then you will probably like this one. On the other hand, if the prior seasons did not do much for you, this is probably not going to change your mind about the show.
This episode is based on the aftermath of the hidden story behind Kate Beckett's personal story. Having been mortally shot, she rises to a new challenge internally and externally as she faces an office with a new boss, and mixed emotions over Castle's poorly timed but passionate confession. Castle on the other hand must wrestle with bigger demons as he realizes the catastrophe she overcame is but a sign that the enemy is far bigger and more powerful than first envisioned. Brilliantly, Castle chooses to create a plot twist to approach the problem from the sides as opposed to Beckett's more direct and often violent approach.
The greatest treat of this series is the dance of criss crossing roles between Castle and Beckett. The unwittingly swap roles and play off each other as though they are unaware of the exchange. Yet the frequency and seamless nature of it is clearly well directed, the absence of human errors and inadvertent toe stepping, suggests that these two characters are intended to be a match made in Heaven as best planned by Hollywood.
It is now predictable that the two characters love affair will tragically fail as Castle has one fatal flaw born from his Mother's persona and presence that stipulates a single mindedness toward living one's life his way at the sacrifice of any enduring love that may or may not come a long. How this is addressed will determined whether or not this series whose first 4 seasons are exceptional may well become the pinnacle romance thriller or just another good story.
Great Stuff,

Opening with Kate Beckett dying from a bullet to the chest, while Lanie Parish works frantically to keep her alive, emotions understandably are running high - Kevin Ryan and Javier Esposito are trying to run the investigation from their cell phones, Rick Castle is having a crisis of conscience having just declared his love for the woman on the table, and Beckett's boyfriend Josh Davidson finally blows up at him.
Kate survives, just, but is not the same person - hiding from the truth of the day, in particular Rick's declaration and lying to her psychologist for three months until she returns to the 12th Precinct and finds that the investigations into her mother's death and her own shooting have been stopped due to lack of evidence, a new captain who is being kept in the dark about the Johanna Beckett case because of the revelations regarding Roy Montgomery and Richard Castle being shown the door.
In this first episode we learn a number of lessons - Kate is no longer able to function without 'her' team, which means she needs to clear the air with Rick, but she lies to him about why three months have past before she gets in touch with him; faced with two armed suspects, she freezes when facing the first one, and only manages to (barely) control the situation when faced with the second one with Rick guiding her hand to a non-lethal outcome.
We also learn that she has told one massive lie about her shooting - she remembers everything from that day.
And that sets the tone for the majority of the series - with Beckett just remaining out of reach to Castle, while he tries to get closer and act on his feelings for her, until inevitably the truth comes out and he feels betrayed to the point where he pulls away (faster than the Serenity running from Reavers). His behaviour reverts to the 'old' Castle - bimbo on his arm and stealing evidence to look at with other people - and this shocks Beckett and Lanie, who both view it as a sign that perhaps Kate has waited too long to admit to her feelings.
Events come to a head in the next to last two episodes, during which Castle teams up with an appalling gang cop who nearly gets them all killed with his gung-ho attitude, and in the second one where Rick and Kate appear to be faced with the undead - the air is cleared as to why Kate acted the way she did, and admitting that if Rick is willing to wait a bit longer, she will be there for him - she doesn't know that he knows that she lied about not remembering.
And then we, the viewer, get to the last episode of Season 4. Yet more intrigue and revelations about Montgomery and Johanna Beckett come to light. A hitman has been sent to erase the evidence held by Roy's widow and once that has been completed, bury Kate Beckett, once and for all.
Investigation of the break-in at Roy Montgomery's home reveal that the player behind Johanna Beckett's murder thinks he is now in a position to quietly destroy the evidence, but the job is botched and the hitman has to clean-up the mess. The hitman is revealed to be Carl Maddox (an alias) who is also the person who shot Kate at Roy's funeral, and he wants to finish that job, too. Loyalties are again tested, leaving Rick no apparent choice but to walk away from the investigation and Kate Beckett, and leading Kevin Ryan to betray his confidence to Captain Victoria Gates.
This turns out to be the wisest course, as Kate faces off with Carl and winds up nearly losing her life, again, dangling over the edge of the building Maddox has been staying at.
This leads to Esposito and Beckett being placed on suspension, but Kate quits instead. She is finally tired of being defined by her mother's murder - she has lost friends and nearly her own life twice - and with Alexis's valedictorian speech acting as a narrative, Kate finally admits what/who she wants to be with in the same park where the two of them agreed to work together again - this time it's pouring with rain which reflects the mood. Soaking wet, Kate turns up at The Loft and kisses Rick.
The episode ends with Carl Maddox having located the man protecting Kate Beckett, and leads nicely into season 5.
