London | The Tweed Run

What could be better than a big boozie group ride all cloaked in tweed? Leave it to the Brits to have all the fun. This past Saturday a group of fixed gear riders rode from H Huntsman & Sons at 11 Savile Row to the Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club. Some of action below. (Thanks to Lark About & H. Hovey for the tip)

    xcubbies,

I think these Herringbone offerings should fit the bill quite nicely.

Handsome men in tweed riding fixed gears…it’s a dream come true. I wish the hipster bike messengers here in Boston would dress like this from time to time.

Am I the only one hoping there were a big scrum of Casuals around the corner?

A tweed suit and a bicycle is all you need to be happy.

    girl on January 27, 2009 1:16 PM:

    Hi,

Any idea where one might be able to get a bicycle with that large of a basket? Would Landmark Vintage in the East Village carry one?

    Oh the possibilities…

Mary Jo on January 27, 2009 1:28 PM:

Love this! Not so crazy about knee-socks on men, but they have me at the gloves…

Makes you proud to be British….sort of. I can’t wholeheartedly recommend fixed gear bicycles, at least not if you live anywhere in the vicinity of a hill or god forbid, hills. Yes, I am aware that Desgrange thought gearing on bicycles suitable only for old women and invalids but Ol’ Henry never actually rode a bike much. He spent most of his time leaning out the side of his motor car shouting at the Bros. Pelissiers et al to get a move on and stop shilly shallying. ” Be a man! suffer!” He was fond of saying and by gad that’s exactly what you will do if you take to riding fixed over anything other than the shortest, slightest incline. Those big ratios will ruin your knees.
    Nice tweeds. Some from here….

Theodore Williams – if you meant me (Sam) and not the other Sam, then yes, I am American. I can’t answer for the other Sam.

    Bean on January 29, 2009 12:26 AM:

    Michael: You mean Maker’s, please.

    Spencer on January 29, 2009 12:41 AM:

Puh-huh-huh-lease. Booker’s, or Knob Creek, or Blantons, thankyouverymuch.

Or, if you’re on the other side of the Atlantic, Jack Daniels. Mainly because it seems to be the closest thing to good bourbon they serve. I say this based on an extremely limited and unscientific sampling.

Bourbon and bicycles, a fine combo. Add to that tweed, because it looks pretty sharp.

    Oh dear.

    Michelle on February 3, 2009 6:13 AM:

How cool is this, and how did I miss it! Tweed on bikes is a great mix and one that really should become law.

Maybe I’ll stand as an Independent for the Tweed party in the next election…

Arthur Scargill on February 3, 2009 3:01 PM:

    What a group of twats.
Cycle through North Manchester you bunch of buffoons.

(what is the collective name for a group of twats -a Twatteria?)

pink bike rider on March 1, 2009 7:47 PM:

Where can I get the wicker hamper that straps to the front of your bike…a wee smaller than a steamer trunk, but not by much. Can girls join?

    Peter on May 15, 2009 4:24 AM:

Wonderful !! Looks to be great fun.
Sadly enough, I know of no such event over here in Germany . Looking always for a nice opportunity to wear my good Norfolk jacket .
Carry on lads ! and ladies , of course.
