Frederique Morrel
June 9 - August 31, 2012
Opening reception: Saturday, June 9, 6-8 pm
Siglo Moderno is pleased to announce Noah’s Ark: The L.A. Landing, the debut exhibition at the showroom by artist Frederique Morrel curated by Jorge L. Cruzata.
Comprised of works which she calls Passe-Murailles and Visitors, this exhibition serves as the introduction of her work to the West Coast. Frederique’s remarkable commitment to the needlepoint medium is evident in the sheer variety of life size sculptures covered with vintage found needlework which she has created. Each of her creations is hand-made and unique, with themes, colors, and details designed to make them feel as at home as possible in their master’s surroundings. Her pieces come with a re-birth certificate, authentifying them as original artwork, signed by Frederique.
The inception of her work spawned at a very particular moment in her life. Born into a family of military from generations, Frederique was displaced by successive stations, marked by conflict and siege, never quite solidifying her roots on firm ground. She had a defining moment when her grandmother’s personal masterpiece, a somewhat kitsch panoramic wild boar hunt in painstakingly executed needlepoint, was discarded when she passed away in favor of more reputable oeuvres, creating a sense of loss and injustice that motivated Frederique to initiate her work.
Frederique Morrel is inspired by Adam & Eve. The Garden of Eden. Temptation. Original Sin. The Fall of Man. Paradise Lost. Deluge. Apocalypse. Noah’s Ark. Redemption. Re-birth. Vanities. Veneration. She questions the dynamics of man vs. woman, of craft vs. industry, of art vs. decoration, of man vs. animal, of beauty vs. ugly, of luxury vs. cheap. She explores the complex relationships that grow in the luxuriant places inhabited by couples from who we descended. She creates artifacts to re-enchant our world. She knits links where generational
transmission was lost. She occasionally speaks to animals in their own language. She likes materials that tell stories of simple, ideal happiness, and that have been caressed by many hands. No animals were harmed during the making of her art.
Frederique Morrel was born in France and currently works in Paris. She has been the subject of numerous solo and group exhibitions globally.
