Kazuyoshi Nomachi has built up a body of work of such variety and depth that he is unique among documentary photographers the world over. The theme of Nomachi’s retrospective exhibition is “Prayers of the earth,” as during more than 30 years in photography Nomachi has documented the world’s major religions of Buddhism, Islam and Christianity and how they are practiced by people in various areas of the world.
Known for his exhaustive research and field work on any subject he approaches, Nomachi has had his books published in five languages around the world, and in magazines, including National Geographic, Life, Stern, Geo, The Daily Telegraph Magazine among many others. Nomachi has had books published internationally on The Sinai, The Nile, Tibet, Mecca and Medina, the Sahara and Ethiopia. In addition his books on the Bahr, Morocco, The Long March, Great Rift Valley and the Vatican have been published in Japanese.
Born in Kochi Prefecture in 1946, Nomachi studies photography under Takashi Kijima before becoming a freelance photographer in 1971. Nomachi has been the recipient of many awards including the prestigious Ken Domon Award in 1984, the Education Ministry’s 1990 Arts Encouragement Prize, the Kodansha Cultural Award for Photography in 1993 and Annual 1997 from the Photographic Society of Japan.
