The West African Examinations Council is an examination body created to decide which exams are necessary for the public interest in the English-speaking nations of West Africa. It is also tasked with administering the exams and issuing certificates equivalent to those of examining authorities worldwide.

WAEC examinations for 2023 commenced on the 8th of May and ended on the 23rd of June. The results were released on Monday, August 7, 2023. To verify your WAEC results, there are three different ways to go about it. Due to documented incidences of examination malpractice, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) delayed the results of 262,803 candidates who took the 2023 school candidate West African Senior School Certificate Exam (WASSCE).

Mr. Patrick Areghan, the Head of the National Office (HNO) of WAEC, announced this at a news conference on the release of the results. At the news conference, Areghan stated that the statistic represents 16.29% of the total number of candidates that took the exam, which is lower than the 22.83% of registered candidates whose results were delayed in 2022.

Mr Areghan emphasized that the council will continue to penalize all instances of examination fraud, saying that all administrators, teachers, and applicants who committed this heinous act were harming the educational system. Also, he cautioned state governments that until they pay the council registration costs for their candidates, those governments won’t be able to see those candidates’ results.
