The Mercedes-AMG SL just got a serious jolt of electricity.

The German marque’s high-performance sub-brand has just unveiled the 2024 SL 63 S E Performance. Not only is the new variant the model’s first plug-in hybrid, it’s also the most powerful SL yet.

The big talking point here, of course, is the SL 63 S E Performance’s powertrain. The setup includes a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 and AMG’s Electric Drive Unit. The ICE mill produces 603 hp and the electric motor 201 hp for a combined output of 805 horses (along with 1,047 ft lbs of twist), which is routed to all four via the sub-brand’s nine-speed multi-clutch transmission. That makes the variant significantly more powerful than the previous range-topper, the standard SL 63, which makes 585 hp and is more powerful than anything else Mercedes builds besides the 1063-hp AMG One hypercar. Thanks to all that power, the convertible can launch from zero to 60 mph in 2.8 seconds and reach an electronically limited top speed of 196 mph.

The Electric Drive Unit gets its juice from a 400-volt, 6.1-kWh battery pack that was designed for fast power delivery over endurance. It has a direct cooling system that helps keep things at the optimal temperature and enables 94 hp of continuous output. The battery will also provide up to eight miles of electric-only driving range and can be charged on the road or at home via an on-board AC charger.

WATCH

The powertrain is the only aspect of the SL 63 S E Performance that has been reworked. The variant’s active aerodynamics have been modified to maximize the potential of its electrified drivetrain. There’s also an optional AMG Aerodynamic Package that includes an underbody element that lowers itself at speeds of 50 mph to create a Venturi effect that keeps the vehicle sucked to the road. The convertible also rides on a set of 20-inch, five-spoke light alloy wheels that hide ceramic composite brakes with bronze calipers. There’s also model-specific badging, including the variant’s name in red and a charging port flap on the rear bumper.

Inside, you’ll find that the car’s MBUX infotainment system runs AMG and hybrid-specific content. The 2+2 cabin also has electrically adjustable sport seats upfront that come covered in single or two-tone Nappa leather standard. AMG performance seats with an integrated headrest are also available as a premium add-on. You can also employ Mercedes Manufaktur program to further customize the interior.

The SL 63 S E Performance will be in Mercedes dealerships next year as part of AMG’s 2024 model year lineup. Pricing has yet to be announced but expect the convertible to cost north of the standard SL 63’s current $183,000 starting price.
