WWRESTLING: Lady Rams Send Nine Wrestlers to National Tournament

The Lady Rams will send nine wrestlers to the National Duels, which start on Friday and Saturday in Jamestown, ND, at the Harold Newman Arena.
Brackets were determined by a 10-member committee consisting of conference raters and oversight members from each of the five sponsoring conferences in the NAIA. A total of 210 wrestlers were placed within the 10 weight classes.
The Lady Rams will have competitors in seven different weight classes from 101 to 170 pounds.

Head Coach Jose Lazo said the team experienced a lot of unexpected obstacles coming into the season. The team came together nicely as the season progressed after losing a couple of former All-Americans before the season started.

"The team has really bought into the culture we want to provide our athletes," Lazo said.

Competing for the Lady Rams are the following individuals.

101 Jolie Lucas (SO/Fort Wainwright, AK) holds a 17-8 record on the season heading into the tournament in her first year competing at TXWES after transferring to Wesleyan from McKendree University in Illinois. Lucas earned a spot at Nationals after placing second in the SAC Conference Tournament.
"After being a transfer and watching her come into form this season and compete at a high level has been something really impressive," Lazo said.

109 Jasmine Sands (SO/Azle, TX) holds a 19-3 record on the season heading into the tournament—a former state champion in high school. Sands has been ranked as high as No. 4 in her weight class but will enter Nationals as the No. 5 seed. Beating the No. 3 wrestler and losing a 6-2 match earlier this season to the No. 2 ranked wrestler. In addition, to winning her weight class at the SAC Tournament.

"We are really excited to see how she competes at the national tournament," Lazo said.

109 Kaycie Tanimoto (SO/Honolulu, HI) holds a 13-2 record on the season heading into the tournament. After transferring from Oklahoma City University and sitting out a year, she started the season with an 11-0 record. Tanimoto stamped her ticket to nationals by placing second in the SAC Conference Tournament with an outright bid.

"Once Kaycie was inserted in the lineup, she hit the ground running," Lazo said.

116 Camille Fournier (JR/Weatherford, TX) holds a 19-9 record on the season heading into the tournament—a two-time All-American looking for her third nod at the honor. Fournier has wrestled several of the top girls in her weight class with impressive numbers. Fournier earned a spot in the tournament by beating the No. 5 wrestler at the SAC Tournament.

"The three, four and five wrestlers in this weight class are all in the SAC Conference," Lazo said. "We think she is getting ready to peak at the right time."

123 Elizabeth Duvall (FR/Rockwall, TX) holds a 12-7 record on the season heading into the tournament. A former state champion ranked No. 11 in the country after high school. Duvall has the ability to give opponents problems due to her length. Beating some wrestlers ranked in the Top 15 at National Duels.

"She is an individual that is very hard for opponents to deal with on the mat," Lazo said.

130 Lexie Basham (SR/Roanoke, TX) holds a 14-0 record on the season heading into the tournament and is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation for her weight class. Basham is also the defending National Champion at 130. She has yet to wrestle as many matches as others on the team due to traveling to Spain for World Championships and USA Camps for the senior level.

"Basham is battle-tested," Lazo said. "Beating the No. 1 ranked JUCO wrestler, and the No. 1 ranked, three-time NCAA Champion in her class."

136 Maryellen Lafferty (FR/Houston, TX) holds an 18-7 record heading into the tournament after moving down a weight class from last season, where she was an All-American in the 143 class, placing in the Top 6.
"We are looking for her to place as an All-American," Lazo said. "We are well aware of the road she has in front of her and believe she can make her mark again."

136 Mea Mohler (JR/Leander, TX) holds a 23-7 record on the season heading into the tournament. Mohler did not get to compete at Nationals last season due to an injury. She placed third in the country during her freshman season and earned her first All-American nod. Mohler is entering the National Tournament as the No. 7 seed after losing several one-point matches earlier in the season.

"I do not believe she is a forgotten name, Lazo said. "Simply because of her taking a season off from Nationals."

170 Aalyah Villarreal (SO/El Paso, TX) holds a 15-11 record on the season heading into the tournament. Villarreal has wrestled some of the top females in her weight class this season, facing off against the No.1, No.4 and No. 6 wrestlers in her weight class. Eventually, losing a tough match at the SAC Tournament on criteria.

"Villarreal continues to push herself in order to be ready for the National Tournament," Lazo said.

Lazo said the team he is sending has a tough makeup that will allow them to go far at Nationals.

"We are going to go out there to compete to the best of our abilities and battle extremely hard," Lazo said.
