King philip II Of spainKing Philip II was born on May 21, 1527 in Valladolid, Spain. He was the son of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and Isabella of Portugal. He had 4 marriages. He had marriages with his cousin Maria of Portugal, Mary I of England, Elizabeth of Valois, and Anna of Austria. Three wives gave him children. Maria of Portugal gave birth to his son Don Carlos, Elizabeth of Valois gave birth to Isabella Clara Eugenia and Catherine Micaela, and Anna of Austria gave birth to his son Philip III. He was King of Spain from 1556-1598, King of Portugal from 1580-1598. The Philippines were named after King Philip II of Spain. Philip was a devout Catholic and saw himself as the lay protector of the Catholic Church with two responsibilities, fighting in its defense and ensuring its spiritual regeneration. Philip II as government of Spain, believed in the devine rights of monarch and used this to justify a number of immortals and illegal acts, such as ordering murders. Philip developed a system of regional self government with viceroy answering to him and he ruled as an absolute monarch. Philip favored sheep ranching over farming, this created large amounts of grains and other foods in the mid 1560's. He also forced natives to work as slaves. He lived for 71 years as king of Spain. He died on Spetember 13, 1598 in El Escorial, Spain.
