May 2010 to Nov 2012, as a UX designer, at EICO.

Overview

It was a long-term project designing Meizu’s 2 generation products - M9 & MX. Their first generation smart phone is — M8 which is the first Chinese local brand smart phone launched in 2009. Then the second generation — M9, the third one — MX.

As it was a long-term project, so we have a deeply cooperate focus on the OS UX design and Meizu’s branding design(website, package, poster, etc).

Design works:

For this project, we cover a lot of product and branding design works. Actually in 2010, iPhone / android phone / WebOS phones / Windows phones etc. there are several smart phone OS on the market, all Chinese brand smart phone OS are developed base on Android OS, Meizu is the first one and most famous one in China! We are all Meizu fans among millions of other fans.

1, OS UX design

We want to design and create our own design language and company branding for Meizu. So we re-design the OS and named “Flyme OS”. It was a challenging work to balance android OS guideline and new design branding. Not only the visual style but also the OS interactions.

Firstly and most importantly is icon, lock screen, home screen, default app UI design. Here is the Key UI for M9. Re-design the whole UI with brand new main icons, status bar icons, brand new UI even the OS is running based on android 2.0.

2, Official website design:

Besides the OS UI, we provide the official website design as well: https://www.meizu.com/ (currently changed because this project was long time ago).

3, Product package design:

The user experience is very important for our users, we try to cover every details of the new smart phone before launch to the market. we also design the new M9 package to deliver a better “Open Box” experiences.

4, Poster design:

Marketing is very important for a new product launch, flyers and posters are a good way for product marketing. As Meizu have their own offline store, we design some posters to display offline — official store, subway ad screen, bus station ad screen, even mall big screen ad so that get as much exposure to consumers as possible. Here are some examples:

Meizu is a important partner, with cooperation from the first generation to many generations later (M8-MX4 Pro). I was lucky to participate in the project for more than one and half years. The final product launched to market with very good feedbacks, customers waited in line to buy it before M9 initial public sale.

It is an honor to help create the local smart phone brand by our design. this is a team work! As the users love it, there is a Meizu fans community called “meiyou” which people can share and exchange their ideas, experiences, feedbacks!
