Soundcloud of a concert at the unique Harare international Festival of the Arts [HIFA] May 3, 2013, a performance April 30 at the Dutch Embassy during an inauguration reception and on May 1st at First Street, Harare Center plus a special jamsession at a nearby village.

Laroo not only asserts her relevance but also the universality
of good cheer with this piece, a party in itself. In homage to legendary Dutch saxophonist Hans Dulfer, her lead vocals exhort liberty and eternal youth to a wieldy juxtaposition of grungy and bluesy guitars paired with Earth, Wind, and Fire-like horns over romping rhythms. Dulfer—father of Candy—continues to gig prodigiously, knocking down audiences rife amongst whom young enough to be his great-grandkids. A chorale of Saskia launches the anthem reminiscent of 2Pac’s big hit “California Love”. Rapper/ Vocalist M.C. Complex splatters the page with Downtown-gettin’- down scenarios. Byrd paints with expanding pads and keys runs harkening to The Doors “Riders On The Storm”. Gaasterland garnishes with additional partying keys comps.

Groovin’ Hard (Song For Roy)
Saskia pinned this piece to as eulogy to late trumpeter Roy Hargrove, who passed away recently, only age 49. Saskia had the honor of jamming with him on several occasions. A smooth, funk-grooved, feel-good number to celebrate this great, she calls on references to his popular “Strasborg-St. Denis”. It’s kinship as well to the work of another legend, Chuck Mangione’s “Feels So Good” is pervasive. Warren Byrd’s horn arrangement culls that West Coast jazz vibe in collusion with his tasteful keys and string synths throughout. Bassist Doug “Basszilla” Long of Hartford, CT lays a deep, deft groove and slaps incisively when it’s time with his 5-string—lekkere jazz-funk.

Camping by a river in New Hampshire, this hymn of fernweh came to Saskia, formerly marked for a drum-n-bass bossa treatment, subsequently stepped down into a lilting, breezy bossa, spirited by Rob Gaasterland’s re-processing of Laroo’s croon and mixing of Byrd’s sweltering mists of sonority and contrasting crystal keys. Saskia lends loping upright bass to the mix. Trumpet and keys do break off solos in a sort of tandem dance. Notably, Gaasterland had her rerecord the vocals of the main verse at his Studio de Boot, supplanting the original ones done via her laptop’s internal mike. His clever technical work distills dreaminess enhancing it’s theme: the wish to run to nature, eschewing reality.

Saskia’s fondness for inflection colors her intent for this song’s title and it’s multiple meanings. Mr. Gaasterland, boundless in wizardry transmuted it from Laroo’s former ol’-school up-funk by steeping it in a modern, EDM vibe. While it’s text may yearn to fix failed relations, derailed
or aborted communications, while it may refer to persons, society, or world leaders, she also insists it can refer to re-instating the LP, hence, bringing songs back on track. Legend Joseph Bowie of Defunkt fame (no pun intended) brandishes his brass throughout, including a pas de deux with Laroo’s trumpet, whose wistful vocals inveigle our ears. Rapper MC Complex’s lyrics wield gravitas onto this opus.

Hartford is the capital of Connecticut, a state situated in New England, the region northwest of New York. First
gig tour there, Saskia encounters Americans who tell her they’re sorry to hear that Hartford was her destination, deeming it the most boring city in the US. Saskia belies their prejudice, falling in love with this town of 100,000 or so, having found joy there...and love as well, namely, in her spouse and musical cohort, Warren Byrd. This number’s laconic hip-hop funk soon slides into a jazz/blues 3rd chorus featuring his crooning followed by the freestyling and song of his nephew, PremeAlom. Beets’s tenor spills out soulful obbligatos viś a viś Laroo’s muted tones. Byrd’s keys and bass conception propels the track, a conception later over-dubbed by bassist Daniel Gueli’s rich upright sound. Beat creation is by Laroo and Gaasterland.

This song’s spirit springs from the boogaloos of two jazz exemplars, the late great Teddy Edwards and much alive great Lou Donaldson. Amsterdam’s 1990s’ jazz dance scene led Saskia to fascination with this latin, jazz, and pop fusion born of the New York City’s 1960s. Her spin on the genre is to fashion a rock-n-roll-flavored ditty over the “A”, chased by an authentic salsa bridge. To build the tension, she extends the last bridge of the piece-her solo out—and thickens the descarga adding a tres under a “tête- à-tête” between herself and borinquen cantador Clave. It emerges transformed from it’s classic quintet start in that true Laroo form: from its jazzy Beets-n-Byrd beginning to it’s sharp halt.
