It’s all about the cats. Or is it about a dog? Cathy Shim and Kylie Kuioka voiced two of the cats Emiko and Little Mama respectively in Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank.

The film is a cross between Kung Fu Panda and Blazing Saddles in this fun animated samurai story in a western setting.

The animated feature has an all-star voice cast that includes Michael Cera, Ricky Gervais, Samuel L. Jackson, Mel Brooks, George Takei, Aasif Mandvi, Gabriel Iglesias, Djimon Hounsou, Michelle Yeoh, Kylie Kuioka, and Cathy Shim.

Here is the official synopsis:

A hard-on-his-luck hound Hank (Michael Cera) finds himself in a town full of cats who need a hero to defend them from a ruthless villain’s (Ricky Gervais) evil plot to wipe their village off the map. With help from a reluctant teacher (Samuel L. Jackson) to train him, our underdog must assume the role of town samurai and team up with the villagers to save the day. The only problem…..cats hate dogs!

The directing team consists of Rob Minkoff, Mark Koetsier, and Chris Bailey. The screenplay is written by Ed Stone, Nate Hopper, Mel Brooks, Norman Steinberg, Andrew Bergman, Richard Pryor, and Alan Uger. The original story is by Andrew Bergman.

LRM Online’s Gig Patta talked with Cathy Shim and Kylie Kuioka about their experience with voice animation.

Cathy Shim is best known for the long-running series Reno 911! Also, she appeared as Vivian Kim in L.A.’s Finest and as Min Soo Bae in The Sun Is Also a Star.

Kylie Kuioka participated in several theater productions including The King and I Broadway National Tour and the off-Broadway shows Meet Me in St. Louis and Panama Hattie. Also, she does many voiceover works for digital media. Most recently, she appeared in Disney’s Better Nate Than Ever.

Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank is in theaters this Friday, July 15.
