Born David Jude Heyborth Law in 1972, the English actor now goes by Jude Law and has become one of the most popular actors of his time. He began acting in the theater when he was young, and began appearing in movies and TV as a teenager. Law became known to American audiences gradually, in films in the ‘90s. He starred with Clair Danes in I Love You, I Love You Not (1996), had a role in Gattaca (1997), and Clint Eastwood cast him in the film Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997). Law’s breakout role came in The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), as the object of Mr. Ripley’s obsession. The title character was played by Matt Damon, and the film earned Law his first Oscar nomination. He followed up this role with Enemy at the Gate (2001), Artificial Intelligence: AI (2001), and Road to Perdition (2002). Appearing with Nicole Kidman in Cold Mountain (2003) earned Law his second Oscar nomination. In 2004 he appeared in I Heart Huckabees, the green screen heavy fantasy film Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, a remake of the Michael Caine film, Alfie, and played Errol Flynn in The Aviator. In that same year he hosted Saturday Night Live the night of the Ashlee Simpson lip-synching incident, and voiced the narration for Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. Another remake followed, this time it was All the King’s Men (2006), followed by the romantic comedy The Holiday (2006). Law also remade another Michael Caine film, Sleuth (2007), and will appear in the sci-fi film Repossession Mambo (2008). Divorced from Sadie Frost in 2003, Law had been engaged to actress Sienna Miller, ending their relationship in 2006.
