I remember on a cold, foggy evening, as the misty meadow spread in the yard, we sat in the room, listening to Melanie’s song, Leftover Wine, in one of her concerts, which was playing from the cassette recorder. When she had ended her song, the audience clapped, and suddenly, someone shouted, ” We Love You! ” And she said in her extraordinary hoarse voice, ” It is so lovely sometimes somebody says something! “
Melanie Anne Safka Schekeryk, professionally known as Melanie or Melanie Safka, was an American singer-songwriter.
“I don’t know how much you have heard of her or know her songs, but Al and I got to know Melanie during Woodstock. It was probably the most remarkable collection of half a million seekers of love, freedom, and peace who proved it was possible to live all in peace together. And she was one of them.
I’m the one
I found the birthday of the sun
But all things change
And I think it’s the birthday of the rain
If I never said goodbye
To all that I’ve known
I would never be alone
But still, I will not cry…
A few days ago, when I saw a ten-by-ten cm announcement in the newspaper about her death, it felt like something had stabbed my heart.”
She was a messenger of love and peace and nothing else throughout her life, and she profoundly impacted our lives, which still lingers in my mind.
We had almost all of their songs on cassettes and maybe one or two vinyl records, and she had always warmed our hearts with her beautiful, hoarse and heart-touching voice among her deep-meaning poems.
Although saying goodbye might be the saddest thing, she had sung sad songs often, but her last words were always ” love, ” love, love, and being alive.
“The Saddest Thing”
And the saddest thing
Under the sun above
Is to say goodbye
To the ones you love
All the things that I have known
Be came my life my very own
But before you know, you say goodbye
Oh, good time, goodbye
It’s time to cry
But I will not weep nor make a scene
Just say, “thank you
Life for having been.”
And the hardest thing
Under the sun above
Is to say goodbye to the ones you love
No, I will not weep nor make a scene
I’m gonna say, “thank you
Life for having been.”
And the loudest cry
Under the sun above
Is to silent goodbye
From the ones you love
Let’s not say goodbye to this flower cause she stays with us with her hoarse voice and beautiful poems about the sun, life and love.πππΉπ»π₯π

This is such a beautiful tribute to a beautiful soul. Although I did not know about Melanie during her lifetime, I very much enjoyed reading about her and listening to her music. Thank you so much Aladin for sharing her poignant, melodic messages of love and peace. Love and light, Deborah.

Your kind comment is so much appreciated, my beloved friend. Although I wonder how I, as a man from the Far East, got to know this girl, and you in England, and even Jeane in the US, don’t know her. There must not be some faults in it, but it is amazing to know how someone could be born in a, maybe not wrong, but a false place! I do know for sure that if I lived in the West those days, I would be at Woodstock! Try her, my dearest Deborah. You will love her. π€ππππΉ

It is back in the 1960βs when she appeared on British TV. I’d never heard of her before. There Melanie was, 6pm, singing βBobo’s Partyβ. There was my mother, horrified at the lyrics; and me, sat quiet, thinking the girl is wonderful. I shall miss Melanie for a long, long time. All the best, Mike

This is an amazing, deeply touching story, dear Mike. I got to know her some years later, of course. The good thing was that my mother didn’t know what she was singing. Stay well, my friend.

Teen me — bought her 45s when Brand New Key came out and was so enchanted by her words and her – confidence, the lilt in her delivery – and I hadn’t really visited the loss because it had been so long – since that moment – I have been visiting her page and revived my awe at her presence. Thank you for a wonderful reminder — I can know her even better at this time in my life. Beautiful soul she is.. Reading the comments section on her main site and on this tribute compilation. The sun is shinning. Cheers! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvehdLqukpg

I remember Melanie from when I first went to secondary school and she had a hit with Brand New Key…she had a such soul-filled voice but I didn’t follow her through the years.βWhen I saw the headline the other day those early days at secondary school came back to me.βShe sounds as though she was a beautiful soul. A wonderful tribute Aladin.

Thank you for this lovely tribute, Alaedin. I had no idea she had passed.
Yes, I know Melanie, the music artist full of love.
I know her from when I left home and became a vegetarian. (I was already barely eating meat). Someone turned me onto her song “I Don’t Eat Animals”.
That song inspired me to investigate her other songs. She was a wonderful performer.
Time is such a thief.
Again, thank you for this tribute.

Yes, dear Resa: time is such a thief! I love that song, too, and all others as she sang all her songs with full love for all living beings. And I must confess that I am not a vegetarian but I eat meat very seldom. Thank you, my lovely friend.πΊππ΅πΉππ

Thank you, Alaedin.
I’m not out to turn the world into vegetarians. However, I would like to see people eat less meat, so they wouldn’t have to factory farm the poor creatures.
I have to tell you, although it was never my goal, I have found an energy… an inner peace … a spirituality… a power … a comfort … a growing intellect and more after decades of being able to say that I have not eaten any animals.
It’s just me. πΉπππΉππ
