The Aircraft

The MiG-29 was developed by the Soviet Union in the 1970s. This 4th Gen supersonic jet fighter entered Soviet service in 1983 with its first western reveal in 1986. It remains active to this day. The aircraft are also included among the inventory of 24 other countries. The NATO codename is “Fulcrum”, with the MiG-29 (9-13) aircraft assigned the designation of “Fulcrum C”. The Fulcrum was operated to oppose the F-16/F-18 of the USAF.

About the Model

This 1/72 scale die-cast metal model from HobbyMaster depicts the MiG-29A Fulcrum “Tornado Killer'' (29060) as it appeared in service with the Iraqi AF at the Habbanyah AB from 1990-1991. According to some sources, an Iraqi MiG-29 that was flown on January 19, 1991, by Cpt. Jameel Sayhood was contending with incoming Tornados. The Captain stated that he maneuvered above the incoming Tornado and performed a rear attack. Targeting an R-60MK AAM, the Captain fired and destroyed the RAF Tornado ZA467/EK. Observers have stated that the events played out differently and that while the Tornado was shot down, it was not downed by the MiG-29, but by a Surface to Air Missle. During the attack, a second RAF Tornado (ZA396/GE) was also downed by a SAM.
