The children of Gladys Smith Early Learning Centre are grateful for the generosity of local toymaker Rod Harkness for his donation of handmade blocks, wagons, vehicles and games. Rod has also fixed and refurbished some of the centres old wooden toys so the children can use them again in their play. The centre maintains a focus on natural environments and resources for children to use in their imaginative and creative play. The toys made and refurbished by Rod are a great resource and wonderful compliment to this focus.

Lifeline training on offer for new volunteers

Community support service, Lifeline South East SA will be running a Telephone Crisis Supporter Training program beginning on February 16 in search for new volunteers for its service. Lifeline South East SA is a self funded support service based in Mount Gambier that provides a broad range of support, information and referral services. It is one of the 40 centres located across Australia. Lifeline is a well recognised and well respected organisation, and the service provides the link between callers and services that are able to assist them further. Lifeline Telephone Trainer and Coordinator, Jeff Hodge explains that the Crisis Support workers provide people with a caring, non-judgemental person to listen and talk to, and most importantly link the callers to other support services available. Lifeline Crisis Support is essential within the community and Hodge says “The service is usually the first point of call for people seeking help when in crisis”. 13 11 14 is the National Crisis Line, and a call is made to Lifeline every 37 seconds with more than 800,000 calls taken nationally in the past 12 months. Nationally, Lifeline has approximately 3500 volunteers, with its

service in Mount Gambier having 35 volunteers. Hodge says the service is always looking for more volunteers to join their team. A regular shift for a Crisis Support Worker consists four hours, with the majority of volunteers doing weekly shifts. As Lifeline is a 24/7 contact service, the hours are always flexible. The Crisis Support training for volunteers looking to make a difference in someone’s life begins with Module 1 titled “ASIST” on February 16 and 17. ASIST workshops are world renowned and recommended by the World Health Organisation. ASIST moves beyond Suicide Awareness and to real skill development in recognising and responding to a person at risk. The community can also help support the organisation by donating either to the National Lifeline, or for locals they are able to go into the local Lifeline centre to donate and can also make a contribution with quality goods such as clothes and books. For further information on becoming a Lifeline Crisis Support Worker please call Jeff Hodge on (08)8723 2299 during office hours.

LOCAL Top players put hand up to represent region at country carnival They’ve got a tough draw but the South East cricketers heading to Adelaide for the 2015 Country Carnival leave full of confidence. The selected line-up for the February 2-5 championships, in which the South East finished fifth in 2014; is the perfect blend of experience and youth with the vast majority of the squad in outstanding form. North Gambier century makers Matt McInerney and Jake Schutz head the list of the rising talent, with the country

carnival looming as a genuine opportunity for the talented batsmen to attract the attention of Outback s selectors – the South Australian State Country team. And hot on the heels of his match saving innings for North Gambier in the most recent round of Barber Shield action, Matt Walmsley-Pace will be a key with bat and ball at the Adelaide based event. Another Tiger that can do damage with bat or ball in hand is T20 skipper Mitch Lewis and his sharp pace and creative stroke play will fill a niche at first change or in the middle order. Kongorong is also well represented in the South East line-up with pace spearhead Michael Waters, who is also a handy lower order bat, classy young batsmen and keeper Mark Smith and former Mount Gambier & District Cricket Association player of the year Alex Hentschke, who can do damage with the bat at the top of the order, as well as take the new ball. And the class keeps coming with Penola trio George Kidman, Jase Bateman and Michael McGurk. Kidman, like Hentschke, could be selected as a batsman or bowler and his allround skills and leadership will see him as a critical cog in the South East machine as it looks to improve on its 2014 finish. His elegant stroke play and crafty spin bowling will be pivotal, with McGurk also bringing talent with willow and leather to the table. A couple of seasons ago, Bateman was so prolific at this same tournament that he was selected in the team of the carnival and while he is yet to amass a huge tally of runs this season, he has the technique and temperament to perform when it counts most. Josh Reader is another player who brings bowling guile and tactical nous to the table and his ability to not just tie up an end but to bowl wicket taking balls will be a huge asset, as will his bit hitting ability in the lower order. His former Yahl team mate Ben Wilson, who now lives in Adelaide, may also be available. The former opener provides another top order option for skipper Robbie Drenthen. The South spearhead will take charge of the South East line-up and will also be a key with the new ball. “I’m really excited about the team

we have,” Drenthen said. “I think it’s one of the best sides we’ve taken in a long, long time.” And it’s the young talent that Drenthen hopes will shine. “I really rate the likes of Jake Schutz and Matty Mac (McInerney) and with another year under their belt after playing last year, they could be in for a good carnival,” Drenthen said. “But this really is the best side we’ve taken since we made the final about four years ago.” The Mount Gambier & District Cricket Association, Kidman Wines and Second Innings have all backed the 2015 campaign. The South East starts its campaign against Fleurieu & District before taking on Upper North and Yorke Peninsula.

Art prize calls for nominations Entries are invited for the $8750 Acquisitive2015 Needham Religious Art Prizeto be held at the Riddoch Art Gallery from May 15 to June 28, 2015. The substantial prize of $8,750 has increased from previous years, offered for a painting which interprets or portrays an event, character, story or truth from the Bible. Spokesperson for the prize, RosHodson, said that the Bible is a rich store of gems to help us make sense of our lives: “Gems are never to be found on the surface – we have to dig for them”. One of the intentions of the prize is that artists may consider images and works which are “life affirming” and uplifting. Simon Klose, Gallery Director, said the prize was “an opportunity for artists to explore and add to the largest and most influential collection of ideas and images in Western art. The Needham Religious Art Prize organizing committee is to be congratulated for offering such a valuable prize for the competition”. The Needham Religious Art Prize is an initiative of the Anglican Parish of Mount Gambier. The prize was first held in 1998, and represents a deep commitment to the value of art and its ability to express ideas and beliefs that go beyond the surface of things. Entries close Friday, April 17. Entry forms are available from the Riddoch Art Gallery and at www.riddochartga llery.org.au

Preparations are already in full swing for this year’s Geltwood Festival. Following on from last year’s highly successful event, organisers have recently released the 2015 Geltwood Festival workshop schedule and are looking forward to seeing the Festival continue to evolve. The annual week-long craft festival, held in Millicent, opens on Friday, March 6, and concludes on Sunday, March 15. With a jam packed workshop and event schedule it is guaranteed to entice hundreds of craft enthusiasts and visitors to the region. There will be something for everyone as the workshops aren’t solely focussed on quilting. Participants also able to take lessons in the arts of fabric making, book making and cake decorating. Wattle Range Council Mayor Peter Gandolfi said it was great to see the town showcased in what has become a much anticipated event on the local calendar.“The town comes alive with colour and creativity and the entire community gets behind our local craftspeople in supporting the festival,” he said. Many of the visitors to the town will be participating in workshops. Local workshop coordinator Xenia Holland is again excited by the calibre of tutors who are booked to attend the event. “Registrations are now open for all of the fantastic workshops,” she said. “You don’t have to be an expert and we encourage novices or beginners to join us and have a go!” For further information regarding the Workshop schedule and what it has to offer including dates, times and venues please visit: www.geltwoodfestival.com

COLLECTED STUPIDITY Liar, Liar... You’re not dead... by Robbie Tansel

I’ve traditionally found I have to lie to get into going out with a woman, not to get out of it. I am a pilot, as well as a brain surgeon, as well as working with children. You have to be very careful that you pick the right lie for the right woman though. Don’t tell a hippy chick that you’re an investment banker. Don’t tell a gold-digger that money’s not important to you and you just want to end world poverty and help the children in Africa. Quite clearly this woman was a bit careless with her lies. Your lie has to be believable. Mind you I have gone out with women who if they told me they were dead, I wouldn’t have disagreed that much. I’ve got to say, I haven’t come up against much dishonesty from the young ladies I’ve encountered over the years though. My most recent ex was very honest with me. The long and the short of it was we wanted different things. I wanted to be happy and she was very honest in telling me that she did not want that at all. One of my ex-girlfriends left me making it very clear that it wasn’t her, it was me. I said, isn’t the phrase, “It’s not you. It’s me.” She said, “Don’t worry about the phrase. It’s all because

of you. It’s nothing to do with me.” Honesty. Brutal honesty. There was one relationship I had that ended because of dishonesty. I met a woman online called Phillipa. We seemed to have a lot in common. I like Hawaiian pizza. She lived in Hawaii. I have an extensive collection of Beanie Kids. She had several kids who liked beans. Everything was going well until I received an email from a prison guard at a US Penitentiary in Florence, Colorado asking if I realised I was communicating with a prisoner on a life sentence called Phillip. Talk about dishonesty! It turned out he’d never even been to Hawaii! Obviously I felt that my trust had been destroyed and it was difficult trusting strangers for quite a while. We still keep in touch but things haven’t been the same. Just to be clear, anyone who is looking for me to pay a few of my overdue bills, Robbie unfortunately passed away next week. Condolences can be sent by email to robbietansel@gmail.com but it definitely won’t be Robbie who is responding.

Lily and the Drum will be performing in Mount Gambier at the Main Corner this Saturday night, returning to the city where they have performed on a numbr of occasions, building a strong fan base. Tickets are $15 and will be available at the door on the night.Doors open from 7pm and there will be a licensed bar. The popular duo will perform betwee 8 and 10.30pm. Following the success of their first album Nobody Just like Me” and recently released EP As a Matter Of Fact. Lily and the Drum will be in Mount Gambier to promote their new album Welcome Change. The night will be fashioned as a club style event with table seating with a focus on creating a casual relaxed atmosphere. “We have made a lot of great friends in Mount Gambier through our previous performances and were looking for an alternative venue where we could stage this type of performance - the Main Corner was an ideal choice” the duo said. Producing a sound that has been described as honest, Lily and the Drum like to keep their live performances authentic without tricky vocal pitch correctors or computers working in the background. Despite this a feature of their live show is the full sound that the duo achieves and this has earned them a strong following around the country. Vocalist and guitarist Lily unites with John on percussion, harmonica and backing vocals to provide something a little different. Their music has been described as “Contemporary Retro, Roots and Blues with a dash of Rockabilly played with a burning passion.” Their live performances have captured the attention of festival promoters which has resulted in Lily and the Drum being added to the bill on festivals throughout Australia. “Our lives have definitely changed in the last year,” the duo said. “It has been a welcome change, as we are travelling all over the country meeting great people at our performances. We love performing in the regional centres and also some of the smaller towns. We have made a commitment to include as many as possible whilst travelling between cities.”

Before I start today I’d like to discuss terminology. I know that most of you youngsters out there probably use the term “dating” to refer to when two people are in the early stages of courting. Do I need to explain the term courting? I don’t like describing two people becoming romantically involved as dating. I believe it is only used because we are watching far too much American television. I will be using the phrase “going out”, as in two people are “going out” which means the same thing. When you wanted to start spending time with a prospective partner you would ask if they wanted to “go out” with you. It is the Australian phrase we used in the 1980s probably popularised when Scott and Charlene were going out. You youngsters might need to Googleise Scott and Charlene. As well as “going out” Scott and Charlene were no doubt pashing and snogging and who knows what else. Let it be known that these are all useful Australian phrases though. Anyway, getting back to my point for this week. I read this week of a young lady who decided that she didn’t want to go out with a young man. She decided to tell the young man that she was unwell and wouldn’t be able to go out with him rather than just telling the truth. As we know children, as soon as we start lying things can snowball. Shortly after this he called up again to see if she would be up to going out with him now. She was still not keen so made out she was her sister and told him that the sickness had actually worsened and she was now in hospital. After another period of time he made another attempt to organise a rendezvous. She again made out she was her sister and said she was still in hospital. When he persisted that he wanted to visit her in hospital she again made out she was her sister and claimed that she’d died. Quite clearly the young lady really didn’t want to go out with the young man. That’s a pretty extreme level to go to in avoiding another human. When it comes to relationships

We pride ourselves on being able to provide the best advice on nutrition, behaviour and suitable products for you and your pet. At PETstock we understand that you’re not just shopping for your dog, cat, bird, fish or lizard…you’re shopping for your buddy, your best mate, your family members. That’s why leashed pets are welcome in store any time and it’s so much easier buying for your buddy when they’re right there with you. At PETstock, pets are family. Two organisations in the Glenelg Shire will receive an inaugural allocation of funds from the newly formed Lewis Court Fund. Grants totalling close to $11,000 will address both remoteness along with isolation and encourage older citizens to be active volunteers and engaged in the community. The grants are the result of the establishment of the Lewis Court Fund set up with the disbursement of funds from the sale of the Lewis Court Home for the Aged in 2012. Edgarley Homes in Casterton will purchase a mini bus so they can transport their residents to medical and general appointments and social outings and functions. Residents are currently transported in a station wagon providing difficulty for both the resident and carer to access easily and with dignity. “The bus will have a hydraulic ramp that will allow residents in wheel chairs to be easily transported and not have to be taken from chair to vehicle and vice versa,” said Edgarley Homes CEO Steven Toope. “The bus will have a further capacity to take seven residents.” The mini bus will give the residents access to participate and attend community events

New community fund hands out first donations and enjoy recreational outings for the day. Leisure and ifestyle coordinator Judy Jones is thrilled at the opportunities it will open for the residents for outings and the less physical demand it will place on staff. “Resident safety and comfort will be greatly enhanced,” she said. “The staff and Board at Edgarley Home Inc are very grateful to the United Glenelg Way Lewis Court Fund for their allocation of funding to us.” Portland Community Radio 3RPC will also benefit from the Lewis Court Fund with the purchase of an appropriate office chair to accommodate presenters with age related health conditions such as spinal injury, arthritis or osteoporosis. On-air presenters find it difficult to sit for long periods of time while broadcasting and the purchase of this simple piece of equipment will ensure older citizens living in the Glenelg Shire can confidently volunteer and engage in community life. The Lewis Court Fund is open to accept applications for funding from August – September every year. Further information on the Lewis Court Fund can be made by contacting Nicole Angelino on 0410 513 305

A landscape artist, Wolfhagen is a master of creating works of art that capture changing light and mood, temperature and atmosphere. To view his paintings is to be seduced by the fleeting elements of weather and the ever-changing qualities of nature. It is the ethereal quality that makes his art so appealing to collectors and art galleries both in Australia and overseas.

Millicent crowns men’s fours champions

Starting on January 10, it took until last Tuesday to play the final of the Millicent Bowling Club’s Men’s Championship Fours. The resulting match proved worth the wait when the team of Iain Campbell, David Crase, Andy Kramer and John Buhlmann played Glen Tilley, Ian Ross, Jim Earl and Bob Baxter in a game that could be described as “putting on a show”. The score see-sawed early in the contest before the Campbell team took the lead midway and were not headed for the rest of the match finishing with a five shot lead at the end.

South Gambier defends T20 title South Gambier successfully defended its T20 division one title on Thursday night thanks to some middle order resistance with the bat and tight bowling and fielding once they set about defending their total of 141. Skipper Robbie Drenthen and Dave Somerfield opened the batting but Somerfield, who so often gets the Maroons off to a flyer, was adjudged LBW the second ball of the match. Damien Kenny claimed the key wicket and things didn’t improve quickly. Jack Capewell has played some critical big hitting innings this season – he was dropped on the fourth ball of the match before feathering a Mitch Lewis ball through to keeper Matt McInerney in only the second over of the match. At 2/6 things were grim and when Drenthen holed out to Michael Silvy in the fourth over, the score was 3/19 and the reigning champs looked worse than shaky. It was then up to classy allrounder and eventual man of the match Richard Crute (right) and reliable veteran Josh Thompson to rescue the innings and rescue it they did. Thompson worked the gaps to continually palm the strike back to Crute and he didn’t let his team mates down, compiling three sixes and three fours on his way to 48 before Damien Kenny returned with the ball and snuck one through his defences. The Crute-Thompson partnership yielded 62 runs with Nick Cruise joining Crute when Thompson departed for 19

and continuing the plan of pushing the singles and giving Crute the strike. Cruise provided a couple of highlights of his own with two massive sixes before a misunderstanding about taking a second run saw him short of his ground when he scrambled back to his crease – Nick McInerney’s throw ensuring the big hitter could do no more damage than his crucial 27. A couple of late boundaries from Dewain Barrett also proved important as South posted a defendable 141. North’s innings also had a less than ideal start with Matt McInerney holing out to Matt Bowering on the boundary before a quick single turned to disaster when Kenny was found short of his ground. The swashbuckling opener hit the first ball of the innings for six and looked set to fire but on 12 he was back in the pavilion. Once again it was left to Michael Silvy (36) and Matt Walmsley-Pace, who have both provided some key rescue innings in all forms of the game this season, to steady the ship for the Tigers. Their 36 run partnership was as critical in getting North back into the contest as the Thompson-Crute partnership was for South but when Crute secured his only wicket for the innings when he rattled Silvy’s stumps, North again looked shaky. Skipper Lewis provided some resistance and Jake Schutz, in the uncustomary position of batting number six, looked promising, but South always managed to create a breakthrough. With three overs to go North looked almost out of the contest, needing 33 for victory but two wayward deliveries from Somerfield and Drenthen gave North boundaries that they were struggling to find on their own and with 11 needed from the last over, it was not a hopeless cause. But Drenthen got back to perfect line and length in the 20th over and North managed only five runs. The tight finish was good preparation for the South boys, who headed to Adelaide at the weekend for the finals of the State T20 competition. North Gambier also headed off to represent the association in the Warrnambool competition. South skipper Drenthen said he through his side had made a below par score but was still confident his bowlers could get the job done. “It was a beautiful wicket to bat on,” Drenthen said. “Credit has to go to the groundsman.” He was also full of praise for his middle order. “At 3/19 things didn’t look good but credit to those guys for pushing on and then being able to get away some big hits at the end.” Drenthen said. The skipper opted to use Somerfield to open the bowling in tandem with Cruise as a ploy to restrict the stroke play of Kenny and McIn erney. “They are the key for North – they love

to score big at the beginning of the innings,” Drenthen said. “I knew Dave and Bick would keep it tight.” And both did – Cruise recovering from an opening over onslaught from Kenny when he was hit for 10 to finish his four overs at 2/18, with Somerfield (1/19)also keeping things tidy at the death as well. “I also thought it was the best we’ve fielded all season, including the T20s in Adelaide,” Drenthen said.
